My friends tell me that I have a wild imagination. I wouldn’t blame them for they aren’t entirely incorrect. I do think of a lot of things that do not have even the slightest chance of happening. Sometimes I wonder how the world would be if cars could fly. Then there might not be as much traffic on the roads, as there is now. Other times I wonder about random things. But mostly, my imagination is solely restricted to my dog. I think that maybe he is like some of the animals that I see on TV. What if I have to say a special word or snoop on him at midnight to find out if he possesses magical powers because of which he was sent to this earth and assigned to me? What if this is the same with all animals? These thoughts are just the result of my excessive reading and watching television. But there are other, more deep things that I ponder over. What if there is more to my dog than meets the eye? Even though he has been with me for many years now, what if there are a lot of things about him that I still have no clue about? If only there was a way for me to find out…..

I wish that my dog could do a lot of things. On the top of that list would be my wish for him to be able to speak with me or at least communicate through telepathy. I can always tell him what is on my mind but I want to know what he thinks about too. While I am with him I never miss a chance to hug him, call him sweet nicknames and shower him with lots of love and kisses. Every time I go outside, I tell him to take care and that I will miss him. As soon as I return home I ask him if he missed me too. But he never replies. All he does is to put his ears down, wag his tail and lick me happily. I often wish that he could let me know in words that he, too, loves me just as I love him. But that is not the only reason why I wish he could talk. I also want him to be able to tell me if I am doing things right or wrong. I want to know if he is being taken care of well and he is happy or not. I want to know if I am lagging behind on anything. It is true that animals find an alternative way to get a message through to you. Usually it is by their actions or the sounds that they make. Yet, would it not be so much better if they could just speak? A dog by the name Mishka is famous on YouTube for being able to say words like “I love you”. If only my dog could tell me that too….

It is a great feeling when you are aware of how much somebody loves you and more so if it is someone that you love. From the time I wake up in the morning till I go to bed at night, my dog never fails to establish his deep affection for me. Even if I am away from him for some time, no matter how short it is, the joy that he feels when I return is evident in his eyes and it just melts my heart. But happiness is not the only emotion that he makes known. If any member of the house is away from home for a day or more then there is no one who is more saddened than my dog. During that time he barely eats and sometimes even refuses to eat anything at all. He just sulks in a corner of the house. All he wants is his happy family, with all of its members together. Then there are also times when he is angry and protective towards me if he suspects a threat. Who says that only humans can be expressive? Even though my dog cannot talk, I sometimes believe that I understand him better than I understand people because unlike them, he cannot lie.

Suppose your pet could talk then what do you think it would say to you? Would it be something that would make you happy or something that would bring out the hidden guilt in you? Could you say for certain that your pet is completely happy with you? Are you sure that you are taking care of your pet well or just doing the very basics? Many people often bring home a pet only because of all the hype that surrounds it. But soon, when the ‘aww’ moments start to wear off and the animal seizes to be the cute little creature that it used to be, it becomes more of a burden to them rather than a responsibility. Then those people either stop caring much for it or they just abandon the poor animal that does not know what went wrong. It is completely unfair to the pet because it did not choose this.

That is why it is most important to adopt a pet only and only if you are interested and not just because it looks and sounds cool. Once you have taken up the responsibility of this other life, you must take care of it and love it such that it does not just exist, but it lives and thrives. Dogs are simple beings. It does not take a lot to make them happy. Love and regular care will do the job. And  after that, every once in a while, do not forget to ask yourself this – “What if my pet could talk to me? Will that make me glad or just sad?” I am sure that I will definitely not hear anything negative. But are you?
