A pet is your animal companion and eventually becomes your family as you develop bonds with it. At one point this human-animal bond becomes so strong that it can turn your pet into your protector. There are hypothetical super-humans who risk their lives for your safety. Now let us have a look at super-pets who have pushed the limits of human-animal relationship and emerged as heroes with their extraordinary and unbelievable deeds to protect their owners and family.

Below are few instances where animals have proved themselves to be understanding, protective, heroic and above all a best friend.

  1. Protector Pedigree

6

This incident took place on a fine October day in 2007. Charlotte Svillicic, a 17 month old baby was playing in yard in her Australian home when suddenly their pet Doberman, Khan starting making growling noises. The reason behind his snarl was totally unexpected, as it turned out to be one of the most poisonous snakes of the world, king brown snake, under the house. The dog tried to nudge the baby away but when it realized no avail in doing so, it lifted the baby with the diaper and tossed her few feet behind him. This startled the snake and in the sudden act it struck back at Khan and bit him on the paw. The snake dashed away and the toddler was saved, but the dog was ended up in hospital. Though Khan was given antivenin and he soon recovered but this act of courage got him appraisal and made him ‘hero of the day’.

  1.  Parrot Alarm

3

Megan Howard, who was babysitting 2 year old Hannah Kuusk, heard her pet Quaker parrot screaming at the top of its voice and flapping its wings. Megan was in bathroom at that time and later said that she had never heard such shrill cries of her pet before. When she came out of the bathroom, she saw the toddler had chocked herself and her face had turned blue by then. Immediately Megan performed Heimlich maneuver over Hannah, a series of steps to save people from chocking. Although she saved the little girl but admitted that her pet had been the real life saver. The bird was later presented with the local Animal Lifesaver Award by Red Cross.

  1. Lulu to the Rescue

2

While on a vacation in Pennsylvania woods, Jo Ann Altsman suffered from a heart attack. Lulu, her potbellied pet pig realized that something went wrong with her owner and somehow managed to get out of their mobile home, towards the road. When a car would approach, the petit piggy would lie down in the middle of road to stop the passerby. The times car didn’t stop, Lulu would go back to her owner to check upon her and then run back to the road. This intelligent act of the pig made a motorcycle stop and follow the pig into the woods. There he found the lady and immediately called 911. Such an immediate and surprising act saved by Lulu, saved the owners life.

  1. A Meow saveS 3

4

Keesling family would have died in their sleep, had their cat not woken them up, by nudging and meowing loudly and continuously. A gas-powered water pump started leaking odorless carbon monoxide in the home. Nobody realized it except the cat, who tried her best to wake up her owners. Cathy’s husband and son were already unconscious, when Cathy got woken up by shrilling meows of her cat. Slightly feeling dizzy she called 911 and got help before it was too late.

  1. Magic Mare

1

Animal therapy has long been known for its health benefits. Animals are known to reduce blood pressure and even prevent heart attack.  In a similar incident where horse therapy proved to be a boon to a patient who hadn’t spoken to anyone for three long years in her assisted-living facility. Magic, a beautiful mare with blue eyes used to visit patients, who needed comfort. That included her trips to hospitals, care facilities and group homes. When that patient saw Magic for the first time, she uttered out her first few words after a long time and that were,” Isn’t she beautiful?” Those words made every one come to tears and the lady improved considerably up on her health. This one interaction got Magic AARP’s Most Heroic Pet 2010 award.

  1. Taking a bullet

5

In this heroic act by Lefty, this brave dog dared to cross all bounds when she leaped in front of one of the robbers, who pointed the gun at one of the family members. This incident happened during one night when the family home was broken in by four robbers. The dog took the bullet all by her and ended up getting injured on her leg and her shoulder. She was immediately taken to the nearby veterinary hospital but unfortunately had to lose one of her limbs. The cost of surgery was too much so in order to raise money for her treatment, they shared her story on Facebook. Not only were they able to get enough funds but the family pet became a heroic pup overnight.

  1. Fire Fighter

KTNABuddyandBen

Buddy, a brave German shepherd, received a silver-plated bowl from Alaska State Troopers for his heroic act when he saved his owners home from fire. When Ben Heinrich’s workshop caught fire in 2010, he shouted to his pet for help. Buddy made a dash to the road nearby and led a state trooper to the fire site. With the in-time help and Buddy’s bravery, Ben’s house was saved from flares.

These are just a few stories of bravery and selfless acts of pets towards their owners. These super animals have saved lives in time, with their intelligent and heroic acts. They are not just your friends, they are caring and concerned for you as any family.

If you have ever loved and lost someone, you know just how painful it can be, even more, when you are the one that’s lost. One tends to lose hope and the sense of purpose. One would imagine that it probably is a lot harder for your dear pet. Many a times, one might see a lost animal that has been abandoned by their owners. The validity of the reasons for such an act is unfathomable. Some might give economic instability. Even though that might seem fair, but one must not gamble on the life of an adorable living being with everything to lose, who will love you unconditionally, no matter what. Some of the more unreasonable excuses include the loss of interest in the idea of owning a pet.

Sometimes, it so happens that some elements of the society with less than noble intentions, deliberately try to hurt your pet or in certain cases even steal them. This is probably in response to some tussle between the victim’s family and the person in question, or to try and sell the pet as a source of secondary income, or in worst case scenarios as a victim of animal cruelty. Apart from attempts at moral policing and improving the safety and security of our pets, sadly, there is not a lot that can be done.

hb 2

Or when a pet has sufficiently fulfilled the original purpose of their presence, the owner decides to abandon them. Such as the extremely disciplined dogs used the police department used as sniffer dogs or those in welfare homes, used as guide dogs or for companionship, once old or disabled even if temporarily, are struck off service, often conveniently termed as ‘retirement’. Such animals have nowhere to be, and are disturbingly found fending for themselves.

Another situation is when the pet itself feels uncared for. Physical abuse although unacceptable, is fairly common in many homes. Using violence as a form of training, especially, is common among many a pet owners. Sometimes, the pet is yet another accessory for an owner, present in the household just to satisfy a temporary whim. Pets usually tend to adjust to the various kinds of people they are with, but sometimes when things get beyond their capability to bear, they try to break free and run away in the hope of finding a better life, which may or not be an eventuality.

hb3

Popular media including books and movies, including the highly successful series of ‘Homeward Bound’ are based on instances when a dearly beloved pet of some family is lost. Such pets could be dogs or cats or any other animal. The movies give relatable accounts of what happens when the pet has been left behind accidentally or deliberately. The pet somehow successfully finds its way back home and into the hearts of those responsible for their being missing. The animated movie ‘Bolt’ is a classic depiction of the love and loyalty that the dog has for the little girl who calls it her own. These pets, in the face of the direst of difficulties, refuse to give up.

Not only in the fictional world, but there have been real stories when a pet has returned home, even after years of being separated from their owners. There was a recent story when a cat came back to its owner after over 10 years, willingly and voluntarily. This was a shock and a surprise not only for the owner, but also those people who believe that cats are selfish and are unattached to their owners emotionally. Dogs that were abandoned or stolen have escaped from captivity and come back home safely, much to the elation of their owners and disappointment of their dog-nappers. These animals have travelled across borders just to be with their owners.

hb4

Animals have a certain sense of direction, an inherent quality of rarely being actually lost. It is fairly simple for them to return to the place call home. They have their own mechanism to mark their territory, relay out signals amongst their own kind, etc. More often than not, it is the human interference that makes matters complicated. If the owner shifts base, the pet now can no longer rely on finding their marked territory to find their owner. Animals are extremely instinctive too. They can sense when they are not truly loved or wanted. So if treated badly, there’s a high chance, they will not make attempts to return to their owner, and would prefer staying on the streets.

As a fellow pet lover, one must always be on the look-out to help owners to find their pets. These pets are just as close to them as a family member, and the pain of losing one is as bad as a missing child. It is admittedly easier to recognize a lost dog from their collar. Cats usually don’t have collars, yet the air about a pet cat is fairly different from that of a street cat, as one might call it. Birds are the hardest to find due to their love of the open skies. Yet, one can always try to bring two loved ones back together.

In today’s world, everyone wants to be at the top. Everybody wants to be a winner. What comes with such a desire is the requirement of hard work. Work that lasts for unending hours. Work that doesn’t leave time for anything else, like spending quality time with friends. Work that takes you far from home, all alone and away from your family. Work that may make you skip meals and family gatherings. And at the end of the day, the only energy one has is for relaxing and sleeping. In such situations, one is often left craving for some companionship. Any kind of camaraderie is welcome. Someone who will calmly listen to you as you vent out your day’s frustrations. Someone you can unabashedly crib to, after a long bad day of work. Someone who will not judge you for not making it to that family event. Someone you can share your happiness and achievements with instantly. More often than not, one might find themselves lonely, with no one to talk to, at any given time of the day. They may be unavailable or unreachable due to their own engagements. Such situations only make the seclusion more evident.

sing 2

This is where having a pet comes to the rescue. The pet could be any animal, from a dog to a hamster. One can choose the kind of pet based on their preferences and the capability to provide for it. Each of these animals too is available in a large variety of breeds; hence one can choose them based on their convenience. One might even say,” you can’t choose your family but you can choose your pets.” Jokes apart, there is no other source of comfort as that provided by a pet. What’s more, it comes with no strings attached. All that a pet asks for is a little love and care, and it will shower you with an unending supply of love, loyalty, faith and friendship.

sing 3

A dog greets you at the door, the moment you walk in, like it’s been waiting for you forever and make you feel wanted. A cat will give you company as you contemplate life’s little mysteries. Fish will listen to you as you talk about your problems. Hamsters and bunnies will lift your spirits with their playful camaraderie. Birds will keep you entertained if there’s nothing interesting to watch on the television. Every pet has its own specialty, to suit everyone’s individual needs.

The best thing about pets is that they have a gift of knowing exactly what you need from them, without you even asking for it. If you are in the mood to play they will be the most playful creature. If you need some solitude, they can switch gears to be a silent onlooker. If you need comfort, they’ll comfort you with a nudge or a rub, anything they are capable of. When treated well, they are the happiest. And their joy radiates and seeps into you, without you even realizing it. Not many can boast of having someone who treats them like you are the center of their world. Owning a pet makes you feel that way and more.

Some pets can even be trained to do small chores for you. Opening the door, getting you the newspaper, operating switches, etc are just some examples. After a tiring day, doing these petty chores also seems like a task. But having your pet do them for you is not only a relief but also absolutely adorable to watch. Seeing a dog coming at you, with your keys dangling in its mouth is a sight that can make your day. A bird that can help you sort through your things can make this most mundane of tasks, enjoyable. The training process itself is a mood lifter.

On a given day, one may be feeling especially exhausted, and the conviction required to get up and get involved in some form of physical activity fades when there is no one to prod you. This could make you skip any form of physical exercise, in spite of knowing that you need it and that you are blowing the money you spent on your gym membership. This is another place where owning a pet proves to be useful. Taking your dog for a walk is an essential task, one that you cannot skip, for the dog’s sake as well as yours. This not only strengthens your bond but also your body. Playing with your pets is an enjoyable way of accommodating your required daily dose of physical exercise into your daily schedule.

When there is no one else available, you can rest assured, that there is someone at home, eagerly awaiting your arrival. You can talk to them with absolute ease. Discussing your problems is especially helpful when there is no interference from the other end. And you might just find a simple solution for the same. Not only that but pet owners tend to attract other people with common interests, which is just another way for you to make more friends oftentimes of the closer long-lasting kind.

Thanks to my Father, I have owned dogs of various breeds, starting from Rottweilers and Dachshunds, Bull dogs to French bull dogs, to English Mastiff and Fox Terriers, from Rhodesian Ridge backs to Pugs to Shih- Tzu and Harlequin Great Danes. But the breed that has always been in our family is the Labrador Retriever,in all the three primary colors but mostly black.

The Labrador Retriever belongs to the family of Gun Dogs and is also popular as ‘Lab’ or just ‘Labrador’. This breed originated from the breed called St. John’s Water Dog which is also known as Lesser New Found land. The dogs were christened thus after the geographic area of their origination called the ‘ the Labrador’.  Another reason behind calling the breed so was also because they were ‘retrieved’ in the Labrador Sea. But the breed actually originated in the Island of New Found land and the creation of the New Found land Dog {the breed} took place around the same time in the Labrador. So basically the two Breeds’ names and their origins have been royally confused. The short of the long is that actually the Short coated dog from New Found land became the Labrador Retriever and the large long coated one that originated in the Labrador, came to be known as the New Found land Dog.

Labrador Retrievers are very well behaved dogs and can be trained easily. They are also very agile, athletic and playful. Labs prove to be the ideal family dogs since they are well behaved around children and the elderly. Due to their alertness they are trained as assistance dogs for the physically and visually impaired or mentally unwell people including people who are suffering from Autism. Labs also serve as efficient police dogs.

The Labrador retriever comes in three primary colors that are, Black, Chocolate Brown and Golden or yellow. But of course there can be variations in their shades, but these variations are not considered to be the signs of a pure specimen. There is another color called Silver that exists in Labs but is discouraged and considered impure. We had one male Golden Labrador, a female chocolate brown and the rest so far have been black. This article is actually about a black Labrador, who changed my perspective towards dog training and habits. Okay, I’m talking about our darling Fendi (picture at the end of the article ) a three year old black Labrador Retriever who simply refuses to behave like a grown up, since it just doesn’t appeal to her. Just like any other lab she too has a knack of getting her way and she uses her manipulative eyes to lure us into doing her work (mostly giving her bits of what we’re eating).

Trois couleurs Labrador

Now some general information, Fendi like all other labs, has a considerably long coat, which needs constant care. It has to be brushed twice every day. Since labs are very fond of having baths, they should be either given a plain water bath every day (only during summers) or taken for a swim. Swimming and running shall maintain the agility of the dog and keep its limbs working perfectly fine. Their nails should be clipped regularly to prevent breakage.

Don’t depend on dog food for your dog, give it home cooked food such as chapati and chicken broth or butter milk. To broaden the dog’s head and strengthen its jaws you could treat them with meat chew sticks available in the market.

Till your dog is 6 months old keep it on a halter when and if you tie it , since collars are capable of damaging the tender neck of the dog. Also on the completion of 6 months by your dog, you should make it wear a tick collar to prevent ticks and fleas. I suggest after six months because the harsh chemicals on the tick collar may lead to rashes on the pup’s soft skin.

You must be wondering why I chose such a title if I had to give general information on dogs, well, you shall see the relevance of the title now when we discuss the behavior of the Labrador retriever. Labs like any other dogs are very greedy, all they think about is food (mostly), so when we brought Fendi home, she was obviously very fond of eating. We thought she ate so much because she was a growing pup but later we realized that it was one of her natural traits. So, whenever she saw us eating she would constantly beg. So sometimes we teased her by pulling away her bowl of food, just to see her reaction, on seeing this she would bark and whine but then she would do the same when we didn’t share our food with her. This trait helped me come up with the title that describes one of their most prominent traits, “what’s mine is mine but what’s yours, is definitely mine!!”

Labs are basically ‘Grown up pups’, I say that because the chances of their mental maturity is 10-11 % and sometimes not even that. I talk with experience, trust me, Fendi is now 3 years old and a mother of 4, but still hasn’t matured. Her toys just like for most labs, are her priceless possessions and she only trades them for food or to sleep on our beds.

Training labs is not a hassle at all, they are fast learners and if taken into hand at an early age of 3 months (by tenderly talking to them, toilet training them), they can be well trained by the time they are three years old. Treat your lab like a child and keep talking to them, they understand around 30 words and commands, but if you keep conversing with them, they begin to understand and respond to day to day phrases. Apart from ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ’lie down’, Fendi understands sentences like ‘Go to mama’, ‘Who’s toy is this’, ‘Don’t touch that’ and much more.

When your lab begs do not lose your temper with it, since they are sensitive dogs. Be patient and train them by telling them to go away and when they do go away treat them with a biscuit or a meaty chew stick. They will soon stop begging. DO NOT RAISE YOUR HAND ON YOUR DOG.

All this and more has been taught to me by our darling Fendi.
