Birds make good pets, but before I begin I would like to add a personal note to it. If you really want to keep birds as pets don’t cage them all the time. They have got wings for a reason. So if you saw your neighbor getting a pair of love birds home and you wish to get a bird friend too, go for a parrot. Parrots are social and intelligent birds. They are trainable and develop very strong bonds with their owners. You can cuddle them; play with them, they simple love interaction, be it with their owners or other parrots. Now that you have decided upon buying a pet parrot, you have got a number of species to choose from.

 Parrots as Pets

a

There are a lot of things to keep in mind if you have decided to keep a parrot as pet. Some of them include cost, space available in house, interaction and time spent with your pet. Generally parrots’ diet includes a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, sprouts, nuts and seeds. Parrots create a lot of mess while eating; one has to be patient to clean the cage regularly. Be careful when you let the parrot out of cage, usually parrots have tendency of chewing upon things like furniture. Protect your belongings before you let the parrot out of the cage. Parrots need exercise and should be left free to roam around in the house. May be you can make a place to play around. Parrots screech and create lot of noise. The owners should be committed towards the pet, and should give enough time and attention to the pet. Parrots are social birds. They need attention from their owners. They might get irritated and can cause a lot of destruction if not comfortable. If you think you can’t pay required attention to your bird pet, then better by it a companion.

Parakeets

1

These tiny parrots are about 7 to 12 inches in length. Caring for parakeet involves going for regular round to a veterinarian, even at first signs of illness. Also parakeets shouldn’t be kept with other species of parrots, they don’t along much together. It might lead to behavioral problems. Parakeets are good at learning and can be easily trained. They can be trained to talk, sit on owners shoulder, perform tricks etc. But all of this is only possible if your pet is comfortable with you. A strong bond needs to be built before you start making him learn things. They love petting and pampering. Care need to be taken care as they get ill easily. Proper cleaning of cage, regular change in water, washing of food and water dishes, regular exercise, and proper nutrition needs to be taken care of. The bird’s cage should be placed at some secure place, away from too much noise and direct sunlight.

Cockatiel

2
They are usually grey or cream yellow in color with blushing cheek patches. The difference between male and female is so undistinguishable visibly that a DNA test needs to be done. Cockatiels require more seeds in their food. Some other food items include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, corn and few fruits like apple, mango, pear and pineapple. Chocolates, ice-creams, pastries etc should be strictly avoided. These birdies require big cages, preferably longer in length than in height. Cockatiels don’t usually learn to talk but males can be made to talk and whistle more likely than females. Patient and soft training sessions can possible earn good results. Breeding is a little difficult and requires time and commitment. It is best practice to delay breeding until your pet is mentally and physically mature enough.

Parrotlets

4

The most popular parrot species is a beautiful blue colored Pacific Parrotlet as the name justifies. Now several colored mutations have been developed though. These species though puny are bolder than expected on seeing their size. There are different species even in Parrotlets based on their color and size. Green Parrotlets are a little smaller than Pacifics and slightly intimidated by new things while Spectacle Parrotlets, which are similar to Greens in size, turn out to be more curious and inquisitive. The cage size for parrotlets should be 18” in length breadth and height on an average. The cage should be longer than being tall. These species require a lot of food in contrast to their size. This mostly includes fresh fruits and veggies, grains, seeds and high protein foods. Fresh clean water is must for you pet. They bond well with person who spend maximum time with them.

African Grey

1

Considered to be the most intellegent of  all parrot species, it originally belonging to Africa, is about 12 to 13 inches in length from beak to tail. A big bird, if you have decided to pet it, you should consider having a big cage and spacious living place for your parrot. They will give you company till 50, although some can even live till the age of 70+. These are intelligent beings and that shows in their behavior. They are affectionate towards their owners, but if bored or frustrated it will create havoc. As the name says they have grey feathers, with threads of white over the fur and black beak. They have shiny red tail color in contrast to old grey look. Like other parrots their diet includes fresh fruits and vegetables but they can even be fed pelleted food along with egg, cheese bits and nuts and seeds. They provide a good company and can easily be trained to talk. If properly cared for they develop strong bond with their owners. But care should be taken as to what you speak in front of them as they tend to repeat everything and remember it too all thanks to their high IQ levels. That may land you in trouble later.

Macaws

2

Macaws are large, colorful parrots named after their feather colors like scarlet macaws, blue and gold macaws, military macaws and hyacinth macaws. There also exist mini-macaws which include species like Hahn’s noble and yellow colored macaws. They reach to a length of 20 – 40 inches depending upon the species. The life span is about 30-50 years though if cared well they live beyond that. They are playful, exuberant, and affectionate and remain happy when they get enough attention from their owners. Yes they screech, they are loud and noisy. They have excellent ability to imitate but not as good as African Grey. Macaws need large cage about 24”x36”x48” for an average size macaw. The cage must be strong enough to withstand their strong beaks. Since they are quite playful, you can get them wooden toys to chew upon and play with and some hangings to climb upon. Their diet can include pelleted food with usual fresh fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.

A pet is your animal companion and eventually becomes your family as you develop bonds with it. At one point this human-animal bond becomes so strong that it can turn your pet into your protector. There are hypothetical super-humans who risk their lives for your safety. Now let us have a look at super-pets who have pushed the limits of human-animal relationship and emerged as heroes with their extraordinary and unbelievable deeds to protect their owners and family.

Below are few instances where animals have proved themselves to be understanding, protective, heroic and above all a best friend.

  1. Protector Pedigree

6

This incident took place on a fine October day in 2007. Charlotte Svillicic, a 17 month old baby was playing in yard in her Australian home when suddenly their pet Doberman, Khan starting making growling noises. The reason behind his snarl was totally unexpected, as it turned out to be one of the most poisonous snakes of the world, king brown snake, under the house. The dog tried to nudge the baby away but when it realized no avail in doing so, it lifted the baby with the diaper and tossed her few feet behind him. This startled the snake and in the sudden act it struck back at Khan and bit him on the paw. The snake dashed away and the toddler was saved, but the dog was ended up in hospital. Though Khan was given antivenin and he soon recovered but this act of courage got him appraisal and made him ‘hero of the day’.

  1.  Parrot Alarm

3

Megan Howard, who was babysitting 2 year old Hannah Kuusk, heard her pet Quaker parrot screaming at the top of its voice and flapping its wings. Megan was in bathroom at that time and later said that she had never heard such shrill cries of her pet before. When she came out of the bathroom, she saw the toddler had chocked herself and her face had turned blue by then. Immediately Megan performed Heimlich maneuver over Hannah, a series of steps to save people from chocking. Although she saved the little girl but admitted that her pet had been the real life saver. The bird was later presented with the local Animal Lifesaver Award by Red Cross.

  1. Lulu to the Rescue

2

While on a vacation in Pennsylvania woods, Jo Ann Altsman suffered from a heart attack. Lulu, her potbellied pet pig realized that something went wrong with her owner and somehow managed to get out of their mobile home, towards the road. When a car would approach, the petit piggy would lie down in the middle of road to stop the passerby. The times car didn’t stop, Lulu would go back to her owner to check upon her and then run back to the road. This intelligent act of the pig made a motorcycle stop and follow the pig into the woods. There he found the lady and immediately called 911. Such an immediate and surprising act saved by Lulu, saved the owners life.

  1. A Meow saveS 3

4

Keesling family would have died in their sleep, had their cat not woken them up, by nudging and meowing loudly and continuously. A gas-powered water pump started leaking odorless carbon monoxide in the home. Nobody realized it except the cat, who tried her best to wake up her owners. Cathy’s husband and son were already unconscious, when Cathy got woken up by shrilling meows of her cat. Slightly feeling dizzy she called 911 and got help before it was too late.

  1. Magic Mare

1

Animal therapy has long been known for its health benefits. Animals are known to reduce blood pressure and even prevent heart attack.  In a similar incident where horse therapy proved to be a boon to a patient who hadn’t spoken to anyone for three long years in her assisted-living facility. Magic, a beautiful mare with blue eyes used to visit patients, who needed comfort. That included her trips to hospitals, care facilities and group homes. When that patient saw Magic for the first time, she uttered out her first few words after a long time and that were,” Isn’t she beautiful?” Those words made every one come to tears and the lady improved considerably up on her health. This one interaction got Magic AARP’s Most Heroic Pet 2010 award.

  1. Taking a bullet

5

In this heroic act by Lefty, this brave dog dared to cross all bounds when she leaped in front of one of the robbers, who pointed the gun at one of the family members. This incident happened during one night when the family home was broken in by four robbers. The dog took the bullet all by her and ended up getting injured on her leg and her shoulder. She was immediately taken to the nearby veterinary hospital but unfortunately had to lose one of her limbs. The cost of surgery was too much so in order to raise money for her treatment, they shared her story on Facebook. Not only were they able to get enough funds but the family pet became a heroic pup overnight.

  1. Fire Fighter

KTNABuddyandBen

Buddy, a brave German shepherd, received a silver-plated bowl from Alaska State Troopers for his heroic act when he saved his owners home from fire. When Ben Heinrich’s workshop caught fire in 2010, he shouted to his pet for help. Buddy made a dash to the road nearby and led a state trooper to the fire site. With the in-time help and Buddy’s bravery, Ben’s house was saved from flares.

These are just a few stories of bravery and selfless acts of pets towards their owners. These super animals have saved lives in time, with their intelligent and heroic acts. They are not just your friends, they are caring and concerned for you as any family.

Parrots are also called companion parrots because if properly trained they interact abundantly with their human counterparts. Though parrots make good pets, keeping a wild animal in a cage is never a good idea. Parrots can be trained to perform tricks and they can learn to recognize their owner but they can also be unpredictable sometimes and there have been many incidents in which owners who have been handling birds for years together have been bitten by their parrot so badly that they had to be taken to the hospital. You can never be certain about your parrot’s mood. Since they are birds of prey any slight thing can upset them and result in you getting bitten. Birds are not supposed to kept in cages, their place is in the skies and that is where they belong.  There are about 370 species of parrots; yes you read it right it is species not breeds. Each species of parrot is totally different than the other. They have different diets, social structures, behavioral instincts and voice sounds. People might think that the difference between a hyacinth parrot and a budgie parakeet is the difference between a pug and an Alsatian but they are wrong. It is more like the difference between a bear and fox. Each species of parrot adapts to a different ecological area and they can be found in any corner of the world.

Parrots are generally differentiated into two groups based on their evolutionary history and body structure- true parrots which are found throughout the world and cockatoos which are found only in Australia.  All parrots have two things in common strong hooked beaks and zygodactyl feet.

Parrots mostly live in huge flocks and are rarely found alone. They are highly social animals and they love to spend their time foraging for food or just socializing. Parrots show their love for each other by chattering back and forth, grooming each other’s feathers and though this might come as a shock but they also show their love by regurgitating food into each other’s mouth. The cutest thing about parrots is that they mate for life.  Parrots do not build nests instead they look for hollow trees or branches to nest it.

The illegal parrot trade has brought down the numbers of many species of parrots. Some examples are the Sun Conures which were once commonly found in Brazil are very rarely seen in the wild.  There are only about 50 to 250 blue throated macaws left in the wild and the Spix’s macaw is practically extinct. People who love parrots reacted rather strongly to the illegal parrot trade, while some thought banning the capture of wild parrots was the only way to deal with this issue other started breeding birds in captivity as an alternative to wild capture. In 1973 many countries across the world entered into an agreement called CITES (convention on international trade in endangered species). The Wild Bird Conservation Act which was created by the Unites States of America has also strengthened the CITES agreement. Today it is illegal to catch a wild parrot; all pet parrots must be bred in captivity. This is a very good thing for pet owners since parrots bred in captivity tend to be much more friendly and calm around humans.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT PARROTS

Parrots like other animals say a lot through their body language

Humans understand what their dog or cat is trying is tell them by looking at their body language. We know when it is okay to pet our dog and when it is not. In the same way parrots communicate with their owners. With a little effort you can understand if your parrot is stressed and when he is hoping to get a kiss from you. If people learn these subtle signs then their parrots won’t have to go to extremes and scream their head off or bite them.

They require complicated nutrition

Most of us think that parrots need only seeds and water to survive but this is not true .They require nuts, foliage and even grubs. Many parrots eat small amounts of clay, soil and plants that probably have the minerals they need.

They are highly intelligent

Parrots have amazing minds. They like keeping themselves busy. Keeping your parrot in a cage with some toys is never enough.  They thrive in environments worth investigating and if you can think of an environment which will allow your parrot to forage then it will surely keep your parrot busy. They have active minds and constantly need to be engaged and indulged.

Parrots have a very long life and some species live up to 80 years so before buying one make sure you can handle one for that long and make sure to mention your parrot in your will because in some cases parrots outlive their humans. Caring for a parrot is not a easy task. They require a lot of work and it is also very expensive taking care of them. Parrots also feel pain and have the intelligence of a 4 year old. So, when in captivity they feel sadness, pain, anger, frustration and betrayal. This does not mean that people who have kept pet parrots at home should release them into the wild, no these birds need us. This article was written to educate potential owners about the kind of commitment they are about to make because parrots don’t just enhance your life like dogs and cats do they become your entire life.

Owning a bird as pet may be fantastic experience for you and your family, they can be the wonderful companion for the beginners. every species of birds are totally different in its own way however the guidelines of taking care of them, applies to all birds. If you are a beginner then you have quite a lot to learn about it, even if you experienced in birdkeeping, you still have a lot to experience. If your family has children and they are demanding for pets then birds can be excellent as they can teach them responsibilities as well as the source of entertainment.

If you want a pet with whom you can create an everlasting bond then bird is that the right pet for you. they’re very smart animals and by giving correct training and socialization, they will proven to be as fond as different pets like a cat or a dog.
CHOOSING A RIGHT BIRD :-
Pets can be the perfect companion if you choose a right pet, they entertains us, teaches us the meaning of responsibilities and can win our heart simply by their endearing nature. selecting a right bird for you can be tough. There are many types of bird in which you have to choose which can fit into your lifestyle easily. Smaller birds are easy to care for such as lovebirds, parakeets, canaries, finches and cocktails. These are definitely easy to care for but can be messy. On the other hand, birds like parrots, conures, toucans, cockatoos, macaws are very demanding birds as they have wild traits. Some birds may be terribly strident like parrots, therefore if you have a neighbor who typically complaints regarding everything like strident behavior then parrot isn’t a right bird for you but however you can buy it if you don’t have such problems as it can entertain you very well whereas finches and canaries are known ad very calm and amicable.

BIRD HOUSING :-

animals-314868_640
They are housed in cages but it’s terribly cruel to stay them in it all day on. You can buy a larger cage for your bird so that it can spread their wings comfortably. However make sure , your bird’s head do not slip out between the bars of cages. The perfect place of cage to be in the window side of the room where lots of activities are placed , you can also place it in the balcony where they can get fresh air and light, however don’t utterly ignore him, he’ll get bored if you do not spend time with them.
Now the time comes for the cleaning of cage. It may be complicated due to so many bars within the cage, however cleansing the cage is the most important task, otherwise, it will result in numerous health issues to your bird. you can place newspapers inside so as to wash up simply. If the cage is smaller then its simple to wash it by putting off toys, dishes etc outside then place the entire cage in the water , however if the cage is larger then take it outside for cleaning it up. Make sure to clean the cage atleast once a month if you want to make a healthy surroundings for your bird. you can dirt off things in the cage daily or once every week like food trays or toys.

FEEDING :-
Feeding nutritious food to your bird is essential. But variety is important when you fed them. If you feed him only seeds and nuts, they can be addicted to it, to avoid this, you can give him leafy vegetables, grain, fruits and various other protein sources. Avoid to feed them poisonous foods such as chocolate, caffeine or alcohol as they are very harmful for them and it can lead them to even death.

TOYS :-

Birds’ toys are just not limited to their entertainment but it also helps in grooming, mental stimulation and bad behaviour problems. But make sure to buy the right toys for it as birds like to chew toys and destroy things, for this, you can provide them toys which not only entertain them but also help beaks in good condition. But ultimately its you who have to spend some time with your bird otherwise they’ll get bored soon. If you don’ have enough time then you can also buy another bird for it who can be companion to him.

finches-213176_640

EXERCISE :-

Birds must exercise regularly like people, in order to maintain their health. They should be allowed to be outside of the cage for flying but make sure all the windows and doors are closed. Also keeps the fans off while exercise. Make sure to stay close to your feathered friend while exercising.

GROOMING :-

You have to know the proper way of grooming of birds if you have one, improper way of grooming can injured your friend. For cleaning his wings, you can use warm water, they are much complex so you have to do it carefully. You should also trim its feathers regularly in order to prevent from flying around high. Also, you should trim its nails, for this task, you should take it to the vent as only professionals knows how to trim its nails without hurting.

With an estimated 11 million birds living as pet, Parrots are now thought to be the fourth most common household animal after dogs, cats and fish. Parrots are amazing companion animals. They are highly trainable, they can be cuddly and affectionate and if treated correctly they form a strong bond with their caretakers. The flip side is that they are social animals, intelligent, born to fly free and so they demand a huge amount of attention and mental stimulation in order to thrive.
parrot 3

The common thing that happens with a parrot is you gradually stop giving enough time and energy to your pet, especially in the long run when the joy of a new pet begins to ware thin. To make matters worse, many parrots become aggressive once they start maturing sexually. But aren’t they very similar to us in the sense how frequent we show mood swings during our teenage days; there is always more anger shown than a smile or laughter. So parrots can also display a slight variation in behaviour due to their raging hormonal activities.
Companion parrot is a general term used for any parrot kept as a pet that abundantly interacts with its human counterpart. Species that can be kept as accomplices include Large Parrots such as Amazon, African Greys, Cockatoos, Hawk-headed Parrots and Macaws; mid-sized birds such as Poicephalus, Rose Ringed Parakeets and Rosellas and many of the smaller types including Brotogeris, Budgies, Cockatiels , Parakeets, Lovebirds , Parrotles and Lineolated Parakeets.
Parrots are beautiful and entertaining to look at. They are smart, can learn tricks easily. They are highly intelligent and hypersensitive both emotionally and physically. With the right home, parrots have the potential to make unordinary, highly interactive, affectionate and entertaining pets, prized by their owners. They however shouldn’t be considered easy care or low maintenance birds. They must never be underestimated.
If you ever think of bringing a pet bird home, chances are your house-maid or favourite aunt has filled you in with various kinds of information about what all the parrot brings with it. If you are yearning for a feathery friend to sit on your shoulder and ask you for crackers, bring home a parrot. Unfortunately the companion parrot has joined the ranks alongside the most discarded, homeless pets. Parrots are inherently wild creatures, even if captive bred, they retain their wild traits. Their loud vocalizations help them communicate with mates and neighbouring folks. That is why they are often mistaken to be loud ad nerve wracking for some people. Improper handling can teach an already fearful or even a tame, loving bird to bite, besides dramatically affecting their health. Learned aggressive behaviour from mishandling is the primary reason why are secluded or they die prematurely.

There are several points an owner must store in his/her mind while deciding to keep a pet parrot. If you are a parrot enthusiast, remember they need specialized nutritional needs. Tame parrots require to be housed in a cage atleast large enough to allow the bird to spread its wings, move about comfortably and exercise, otherwise they tend to become obese and unhealthy. Parrots do not need complicated nutrition. If you are new to the world of parronting, you may think that all you have to do is give your bird fresh seeds and water to drink. But parrots eat a lot more like a tremendous variety of nuts, fruits, foliage and even grubs, also fresh vegetables. Things that are too fine for the humans or other animals can be poisonous for your parrot. There is a large variety of parrot food available for the optimal health of your parrot.
A common myth is to keep lovebirds in pairs, its best to keep two males together because female lovebirds are territorial. Parrot owners should train their pets like stepping into a carrier, thus giving you an opportunity to become a better communicator which is a rewarding treat to your bird. Pretty soon, you will have a happy parrot to cheer up your household. A long run commitment for your feathered friend may seem an easy task but like a human relationship, parrot owner relation has its own ups and downs.
Parrots have complicated brains. You may often hear that parrots scream, are messy. Parrots tend to be loud creatures since they are wild. Pet birds might quickly learn to skip all the signs of aggression and jump straight to bite. Last but not the least, parrots need space and chance to play and explore with their beaks and feet. Parrots are wild animals tamed by us. They weren’t bred to be perfect pets, so your bond will not be intuitive as with a domestic dog or cat. Don’t expect your parrot to look for ways to fit into your home. Instead you are going to have to work to encourage acceptable behaviour and communicate its reward.

Parrots have strange body language. Feathers and beaks are difficult to read than fur and fangs. Learning those subtle signs and then acknowledging them will resist your parrot from resorting to biting and screaming to get what it needs. Parrots are intellectual animals which means they can learn new behaviours- good or bad. Appropriate sized toys are a necessity for them. The lifespan of a parrot is long, it may outlive its owner. Adult parrots are often re-homed by their owners or offered for adoption from a parrot shelter, make great pets after they adjust to their new home. And for the fact that they are messy, look at your disorganised room. Alas! You are no less.
