Do animals have spirits? Do they also become ghosts after they die as many people believe about humans? Perhaps yes. There are many instances, where humans have experienced or felt their pets, better to say apparition of them, long after they have gone to their heavenly abode. It is believed that owners with strong bond with their pets, who suffered great loss after their sudden death, are often approached by ghosts of their pets to remind them that they are alright wherever they are and not to worry about them. It can be a made up story and hypothetical theory, no one knows. Also there are many contradictory questions to it like can only animal pets return as ghosts or if even insects like mosquitoes can come back as phantom animals from the afterlife. Below is a countdown of stories that make you twitch in your seats and leave you baffled. Have a look.

5. Ghost of Ozzy

5

This is story about a pet ferret, which had to be put down by the owner because of serious illness. Ozzy used to live in the owners grandmother’s house with another pet cat and both were best buddies. After the ferret’s demise, her grandmother started experiencing certain unexpected activities. She claims that every night she felt something climbing under her covers, near her feet. She even tried keeping the night lights on, stripping the bed covers, suspecting it can be mice, but nothing turned up. Also she noticed the cat’s behavior change as if it was playing with Ozzy, as it used to when the ferret was alive. Though her grandmother’s can’t see anything but she is convinced that their pet is still around them and comes to sleep right next to her feet every night.

4. Bandit came Back

1

This story might not be easy to believe so does every other ghost story unless it is scary. This begins when the owner’s pet died unexpected death while being treated for some illness which it suffered from past three months. The owner was quite attached to the dog and was devastated on hearing the news of his pet dog. Sad and not able to get over this tragedy, one night he went to bed and woke up out of his body. He sat up and looked around to find his dog’s twin sister sleeping at his feet. The room turned dark and he saw his dog, Bandit against his leg, looking at him. Though he didn’t feel scared but certainly he was taken aback. Bandit looked healthy, fresh and wagged its tail continuously. It jumped down and ran off in distance looking back at his owner and wagging his tail. He then woke up suddenly but the out-of-body experience was so realistic that he made a dash to his brother’s room and told him about it. The dog carried a message to his owner as to not worry for it and that he is happy now.

3. Ghost Friend

2

In one of the cases the owner’s daughter suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since she was 12. Due to this she was in discomfort most of the time. But the strange part was that from the past couple of years she had been telling her mother that a ghost visited her and sat on her bed when she really felt sad. She claimed that it always sat right next to her feet and the mattress would depress right there when it would sit. Suddenly a realization dawned upon her mother who was dead sure now that it was their cat Andy, whom they had lost couple of years back. How? Well, Andy, when alive used to follow the same routine when her daughter would have been sad before.

2. Diabolic Cat

3

Not satisfied with the above stories? How about a ghost cat lurking around in Washington D.C? Demon D.C is the name given to the cat that haunts the government buildings in Washington D.C. The story behind it begins when cats were brought in the basement tunnel of the building to get rid of the rat menace. As the legend goes, there is a black cat ghost that is seen before and after the presidential elections in Washington D.C. It was spotted by the White House guards, the night before John F. Kennedy’s and Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The cat is said enlarge to the size of a tiger and even pounce on its victim and disappear in mid air. In an incident in 1890, one of the guards had fired at it while the other got a heart after seeing it, though it vanished.

1. Out of Ouija

4

Calley had a pet cat called Princy, which was seven human years when it had died few years back. This story is about two curious friends who played with Ouija Board one night. Dangerous as it is, they tried with the game and started asking question to the spirits like, ‘What is your name?’ and ‘How old were you when you died?’ The thing that frightened them was when the board replied that its name was Princy and it is seven years old. After finishing off the game, strange things started happening day by day. Calley heard moans of cat, the same she had heard when Princy was dying. Often she would here purring sounds in the basement which would often scare her. All this continued for some time but eventually dropped to nothing. Calley thinks it was Princy’s way of saying goodbye to her owner.

If you have ever loved and lost someone, you know just how painful it can be, even more, when you are the one that’s lost. One tends to lose hope and the sense of purpose. One would imagine that it probably is a lot harder for your dear pet. Many a times, one might see a lost animal that has been abandoned by their owners. The validity of the reasons for such an act is unfathomable. Some might give economic instability. Even though that might seem fair, but one must not gamble on the life of an adorable living being with everything to lose, who will love you unconditionally, no matter what. Some of the more unreasonable excuses include the loss of interest in the idea of owning a pet.

Sometimes, it so happens that some elements of the society with less than noble intentions, deliberately try to hurt your pet or in certain cases even steal them. This is probably in response to some tussle between the victim’s family and the person in question, or to try and sell the pet as a source of secondary income, or in worst case scenarios as a victim of animal cruelty. Apart from attempts at moral policing and improving the safety and security of our pets, sadly, there is not a lot that can be done.

hb 2

Or when a pet has sufficiently fulfilled the original purpose of their presence, the owner decides to abandon them. Such as the extremely disciplined dogs used the police department used as sniffer dogs or those in welfare homes, used as guide dogs or for companionship, once old or disabled even if temporarily, are struck off service, often conveniently termed as ‘retirement’. Such animals have nowhere to be, and are disturbingly found fending for themselves.

Another situation is when the pet itself feels uncared for. Physical abuse although unacceptable, is fairly common in many homes. Using violence as a form of training, especially, is common among many a pet owners. Sometimes, the pet is yet another accessory for an owner, present in the household just to satisfy a temporary whim. Pets usually tend to adjust to the various kinds of people they are with, but sometimes when things get beyond their capability to bear, they try to break free and run away in the hope of finding a better life, which may or not be an eventuality.

hb3

Popular media including books and movies, including the highly successful series of ‘Homeward Bound’ are based on instances when a dearly beloved pet of some family is lost. Such pets could be dogs or cats or any other animal. The movies give relatable accounts of what happens when the pet has been left behind accidentally or deliberately. The pet somehow successfully finds its way back home and into the hearts of those responsible for their being missing. The animated movie ‘Bolt’ is a classic depiction of the love and loyalty that the dog has for the little girl who calls it her own. These pets, in the face of the direst of difficulties, refuse to give up.

Not only in the fictional world, but there have been real stories when a pet has returned home, even after years of being separated from their owners. There was a recent story when a cat came back to its owner after over 10 years, willingly and voluntarily. This was a shock and a surprise not only for the owner, but also those people who believe that cats are selfish and are unattached to their owners emotionally. Dogs that were abandoned or stolen have escaped from captivity and come back home safely, much to the elation of their owners and disappointment of their dog-nappers. These animals have travelled across borders just to be with their owners.

hb4

Animals have a certain sense of direction, an inherent quality of rarely being actually lost. It is fairly simple for them to return to the place call home. They have their own mechanism to mark their territory, relay out signals amongst their own kind, etc. More often than not, it is the human interference that makes matters complicated. If the owner shifts base, the pet now can no longer rely on finding their marked territory to find their owner. Animals are extremely instinctive too. They can sense when they are not truly loved or wanted. So if treated badly, there’s a high chance, they will not make attempts to return to their owner, and would prefer staying on the streets.

As a fellow pet lover, one must always be on the look-out to help owners to find their pets. These pets are just as close to them as a family member, and the pain of losing one is as bad as a missing child. It is admittedly easier to recognize a lost dog from their collar. Cats usually don’t have collars, yet the air about a pet cat is fairly different from that of a street cat, as one might call it. Birds are the hardest to find due to their love of the open skies. Yet, one can always try to bring two loved ones back together.

Any movie buff with a particular partiality towards animals will in all probability be in love with the movie 8 below. And if one were to watch it, so would they fall in love with the movie; if not the movie, then the protagonists for sure. And no, the late Paul Walker is not being talked about here, but the fascinating team of eight absolutely adorable snow dogs. Another movie with this breed in the lead is Snow Dogs where a Miami dentist inherits a pack of snow dogs, which he eventually learns to love and trains them for the annual event.

There is just something so endearing about huskies that one can’t help but feel an instant connection to them. There is a reason so many movies and books have huskies as a central character. These gorgeous furry creatures are not only one of the oldest breeds, but are some of the most fiercely loyal dogs one would come across. Their lovable, playful temperament is loved and appreciated by one and all. The Siberian husky as the name suggests, originated in Siberia and is characterized by its dense coat. It belongs to the Spitz genetic family. The thick furry coat, triangular erect ears and markings are distinctive.

The snow clad mountainous terrains of Northeast Asia was where this breed was first brought in to use as a working dog. They would be used to pull heavy loads of luggage and people through long distances over some of the roughest terrains in the most unpredictable climatic conditions. The ancestors came from some severely harsh and chilling climates in the Siberian Arctic. In spite of the weather, the breed has always been extremely active, energetic and resilient to all environments. The breed was eventually imported to various parts of the world, including Alaska, Canada and the United States. Because of their ability to persevere through the snow, they were originally only used as sled dogs, but as their popularity grew they adapted to be used as family dogs or even in the show business.

husky 2

The dog will ideally live for 12-14 years weighing 16-27kgs growing up to the height of 51-64cm. to help them adapt to the cold weather, they are born with a thick undercoat and a soft outer coat. Such an arrangement makes it able to survive in Arctic temperatures that could be as low as -60 degree Celsius. What is interesting is that in spite of being ideally suitable for cold climates, their coats can adjust to warmer temperatures with relative ease. The outer coat reflects heat in the summer and can naturally change to adapt to the hot temperatures, although weekly grooming is essential in all seasons. They exist in all shades of black to white with distinctive patterns and combinations, sometimes with a hint of brown or red. They can have eyes ranging from blue to green to brown or amber. Some huskies are known to have eyes of differing colors or part-colored.

The breed name Husky originates from the word Esky, as a derivative of Eskimos, their first human companions. Their uninhibited loyalty and faith in their owners has been well documented in movies based on real life, such as 8 Below, when in spite of being temporarily abandoned in an Arctic storm, they survived and waited for the return of their owner for over 50 days, all by themselves. Their undying love and affectionate nature makes them an all-rounder of sorts. They are prone to display signs of their ancestral behavior. This includes tendency to howl instead of bark. They love to play and run. Because of their inherent traits similar to that of an escape artist, fences as high as 2 meters are recommended.

husky

They are incredibly protective of children, and need constant human companionship. One must make sure to provide them with their daily dose of intense physical activity. Because of their predatory instincts, they might not be accepting of other animals in the house and can become a source of worry in presence of small animals. While at the same time, this trait makes them a formidable form of safety and security against intruders. They tend to need training lessons to differentiate friend from foe and other obedience issues. They are extremely intelligent and are trusting companions. Most of their health issues are genetic such as seizures or ailments related to eye defects. Because of their medium to large size, lack of exercise makes them prone to bone issues such as hip dysplasia. When used as sled dogs gastric and breathing difficulties become increasingly common.

They are cute and cuddly and are extremely attractive for young children, so much so that the Siberian Chukchi people used to have the dogs look after their children. They are gentle in their demeanor, yet have a tendency to be destructive, roam and run away. But with their genetic directional skills, they easily find their way back. If trained well when young, they make great family dogs. They are independent in a way, but still enjoy human interaction. Their outgoing nature is just another addition to the exhaustive list of their qualities, which just makes them even more desirable.

Let’s say there’s someone who really loves animals, someone who genuinely cares for animals and would find it a privilege to be able to own a pet. But due to some reason is unable to fulfill this wish of theirs. Financial constraints, lack of space, unavailability of time to devote to them or incompatibility with the other members of the household. Sometimes, one’s profession is such, that it demands constant travel. This translates to inability to take proper care of the pet. In cases like these, there is a need for establishments that cater to such people. A place where one can go and live the life they have always dreamed of.

The concept of petting zoos first came into the picture when the London zoo started a children’s zoo with domesticated animals and trained wild animals, which they could play with, touch, pet and even feed. With time this idea grew and spread to other cities around the world. There are places that are still reluctant to accept the idea of opening up their zoos for human contact. The apprehension could be due to the investment that it requires in terms of capital and staff. While at the same time, some might say that there’s a certain risk factor involved for people and animals alike. One cannot expect every person to be genuinely caring towards the animals. Certain people including children find it amusing to try and harm or pester the poor creatures. Similarly, some time an animal might be particularly unpredictable.

pet 3

But zoos, where this experiment has been successful, vouch for the increased acceptance and popularity of animals as an integral part of one’s well being, compared to where one could only view them from beyond safety enclosures. It is also an effective source of revenue generation as well as increased employment opportunities amongst professionals trained in handling animals. The importance of affinity towards animals was propagated through such an experience. Awareness towards how they should be treated was also generated. Hands on experiences are useful in making professions to do with animals, an evidently viable career option too. It also helped to change the thought amongst people that one must stay away from animals. One needs to be careful but not scared of them. As a result people got an opportunity to experience bonds with animals. One could explore the love that any animal feels for someone who treats it right, whether they are pet, domestic or even wild, in most cases.

The animals that are usually considered for petting zoos are well trained. Domestic animals such as cows and goats are often used. Some wild animals that are harmless are also present. Alpacas, llamas, monkeys, pythons and even kangaroos are often found to be some of the popular choices. Guinea pigs, turtles, birds, miniature donkeys, rabbits and ponies are especially loved by young children. The zoos provide the patrons with relevant food, to ensure the health and well being of the animals is not compromised, and at the same time it is convenient for them. Food often fed to them includes hay, grass or crackers based on the animal in question. This is an exception to the general rule of not feeding zoo animals.

pet 2

Animal lovers will tell you that the mere petting of an animal can successfully help you release the stress and tension of regular day-to-day life. Even watching them go about their business at leisure soothes the nerves. A genuinely happy animal can transmit similar feelings into those around it. Their lovable and adorable nature makes one feel special in an instant. Scientific studies have proven the benefits of constant interaction and contact with animals. Kids benefit especially from pet animals, and since one may not be able to own one, having a place where they can experience the joys of being a pet owner, even for a short time, can help make the child less aggressive, sharper and a better human being.

While there are innumerable benefits of contact with animals, one needs to be aware if they are allergic to any particular animal. Some people might be prone to allergic reactions to animals such as cats, or animal hair. If so, one must avoid any contact with them, at the risk of fatalities. Apart from that, there is also the risk of transmitting diseases to and from the animals. Hence, it is critical to properly cleanse yourselves before and after coming in contact with them.

pet 4

Along the lines of petting zoos, cat cafes are now popular in some eastern countries especially Japan. These cafes allow people to interact with cats exclusively at nominal charges. The physiological and psychological benefits of petting cats are well documented, especially among the elderly. The purring sound that they emanate while being petted is deemed to be comforting for most people. Their unassuming, no-fuss temperament is highly appreciated by cat lovers. There is an increasing need of establishments along such lines considering the kind of lifestyle that is becoming common lately. A place where one can rejuvenate among silent, loving, non-judgmental creatures that help you relax without asking for anything in return.

We all love our pets. And we try to do everything that we possibly can to ensure they lead a happy and comfortable existence no matter how short it may be. What we are able to provide is not only based on our pet’s requirements but also on the affordability. All pets deserve to be treated like royalty the standard for which is set by their respective owners. But there are certain lucky ones that live life truly king size. These belong to the rich and famous people of the world. One could even say that the kind of treatment that these pets receive is probably better than most humans do. Their standard of living is significantly higher than their relatively less blessed peers.

These dogs get their own houses to live in. and not just the typical doghouse. These fully fledged dog houses can come with fully functional temperature controlled swimming pools. Not just that, the houses too are temperature controlled with custom designed furniture to suit the dog’s size and needs complete with a television set. They have their own personal butlers and physical trainers at times available at their every beck and bark. Regular massages and luxury treatments keeps them healthy and happy. What’s more is that they travel too in incredible style. Air conditioned private jets in the company of their affluent owners and luxury yachts and cruise liners for overseas travels and for domestic nothing less than equally extravagant cars and planes are their preferred mode of transport.

Paris Hilton for example is particularly partial towards her Chihuahua. She has been seen carrying it around everywhere she goes in its own custom designed Louis Vuitton purse. Decked in branded sunglasses or clothes often coordinated with her own, she sure knows how to pamper her lovable pooch. This dog lives the high life. It gets to visit some of the most exotic places in the world, travelling in style and living in utmost comfort.  Hollywood celebrities live with their pets in eloquence. The food is fresh of the highest standards. They are also dressed in clothes custom made by designers like Dolce and Gabbana.

Some stars go to extreme lengths to keep their pets in close vicinity, living with just as many as comforts as they themselves do. A famous Bollywood actor was reported to buy an entire plot adjacent to his own home, exclusively for his pets. They would live, play and peacefully co-exist right next to the actor in question. They were provided with a 24 hour help who would be expected to take complete care in his absence. This proximity made sure that the actor could go and visit his beloved pets whenever he could and rejuvenate himself by playing with them when he felt it necessary.

Michael Jackson is another example of celebrities with a special bond with his pets. He was a step ahead of other celebrities. This is because he not only had typical animals like dogs, etc. as pets, but his favorite pet was a chimpanzee. He kept all his pets in his grand mansion equipped with its very own zoo and amusement park, he liked to call Neverland. He was one of the richest, most popular musicians of all time. With the resources at his disposal, he made sure this reflected in the kind of life his pets lived too. They would oftentimes accompany him in his private jet on his music tours all around the world. Their living arrangements were at par with his own in fully serviced suites.

There have been several instances across the world where a rich person has left all their inheritance and property to their pet’s well-being instead of their family members or friends. Their legal will clearly states that the millions of dollars in their name are now in the hands of their beloved pet. This is not restricted to dogs but cats too. After the pet’s death, the remaining inheritance is then utilized as donation to charities or further transferred to the pet’s off springs. Or it could be used in the upkeep of the residence. This not surprisingly does not bode well with the relatives of the person in question.

Sometimes burglars find it a good alternative to kidnap a rich person’s pet. This is because the net worth of the pet or the amount of money in the pet’s account is high enough to compensate for other materialistic gains. The pet is so dear to the owner, that they are willing to pay abnormally high amount of ransom money, just to get their beloved pet back. There are cases where the pet is much dearer to the owner than his own offspring. Many a movies have been made along these lines, where the kidnappers find it cumbersome to provide the pet with the same kind of lifestyle that it is comfortable with.

Some might call it a futile waste of money. Such affluent people should take the responsibility of not only providing their pets with such an extravagant lifestyle, but at the same time try to adopt stray, abandoned or sick animals as pets, those that genuinely need special care and attention. They must also invest in the setting up of establishments catering to care of animals.

The greatest most undeniable truth of life is mortality. Everyone dies. Growing old is a part of this journey that everyone undertakes. Growing old comes with a reduction in worldly responsibilities and duties. But sadly, it also comes with its fair share of problems. More often than not one’s health starts to deteriorate. The recovery rate is much lower than what one is used to. Repercussions of our youth’s ill- fated decisions begin to show. Along with that comes the onset of isolation. One begins to feel segregated from the rest of the world. One cannot seem to relate with so many aspects of life. Sometimes one’s own family is unable to spare sufficient time for us, and there’s that can be done. In some cases, the health of our friends or our own comes in the way of regular meet and greet. This situation is far worse, in case of disability. Disability in terms of physical health or mental both are equally heartbreaking.

eld 4

A pet animal is the single most effective way to combat loneliness and provide actual and virtual relief to the elderly and disabled. Your friends and family may not be around at all times, but a pet will always be by your side no matter what. And this holds equally true for any pet that one chooses. Pets seem to have a special bond with them. They can be truly understanding and extremely lovable. Animals are such adorable friends. They ask no questions and pass no criticism.

In certain cases, the elderly lose track of what has been said, and tend to keep repeating things. Other people around may not be comfortable in dealing with such instances and may lash out, making the person in question feel even more unwanted. Pets on the other hand give a patient ear for everything that one has to say and respond sincerely. They make up for any absence in the person’s life and make them feel wanted, to reinstate their feeling of significance in someone’s life.

eld 2

Spending time with a pet for an elderly person is good for their morale, uplifting their spirits and feeling of self-worth. Any act of love or kindness is received with utmost gratification. Pets treat their owners like they are the only thing that matter. They are the single most important person for a pet. A pet feels like it is their job to ensure the well-being of the owner, whether it is physical or emotional.

A pet at home is like a guarantee for the other members of the family for the safety and comfort of the elderly or disabled member of the family. They know that the pet will ensure that the person does not feel lonely or insecure in the absence of other family members. There are instances when the person and the pet are so close, that the relevance or value of presence of any other family member is significantly reduced.

Communication between the two becomes a regular feature in their daily schedules. The person talks chats with the pet, even though it may not understand exactly what is being said. But sometimes just listening intently is all that they need. In other cases the conversations are wordless, yet the pet understands if the person needs it to react or just reach out with a nuzzle and a soft sound.  Pets that may usually be considered loud, are sensitive around the elderly and disabled. A pet can recognize that it needs to be calm peaceful and quite when dealing with them.

Pets are especially adept at providing emotional support and physical comfort to them. Just stroking and gently petting your pet acts like an anti-depressant. It soothes the nerves and calms your mind. No actual conversation is required, and this time will be deemed as time well spent. Engaging in any kind of physical activity seems cumbersome if one is forced to do it. But when there is a pet for company, the elderly and disabled are encouraged to do what is necessary. Walking the dog or playing with the cat seems harmless while at the same time provide sufficient physical exercise for them and cheers them up.

Pets can be trained to act as passive companions. Such as a seeing dog is an immense asset for blind people. It is no wonder that hospitals and geriatric centers are increasingly adopting pets as an additional effort to aid in health care. Cats are known to be a proficient support system when a patient’s health is fast deteriorating. They can sometimes tell when he is about to pass away. Just watching a pet and spending time with them a stress reliever. Pets give love much more than what they receive without any expectations or falsifications. This true nature of a pet is a gentle reminder to the owner that they are loved and cared for. Scientific studies around d world continue to prove the value of a pet in one’s life. In addition to which, the faith and loyalty of a pet towards the owner even after their death has often been immortalized in literature and in movies.

Everybody says a dog is a man’s best friend. That is an undeniable truth. But even so, there’s so many of us, who disagree to that. Ardent dog lovers have always failed to understand why. Are the countless stories all over the world not enough proof of their generosity, their loyalty, their never ending love and their unassuming ever multiplying joy that radiates and seeps into anything and anyone in contact? For those who love these furry or sometimes not-so-furry creatures, the mere sight of a dog just walking by, is a reason to smile. One can almost feel their stress melt away, and that’s not just a momentary feeling; it actually lasts. Any dog lover must have lost count of the number of times they have caught themselves saying hi to a dog. Not only pets but also the street mongrels are just as lovable, one only needs to give them a chance.
There are three types of people when it comes to dogs.

Those who love them, those who hate them, and then there’s those who for some reason discriminate between the street and the pet kind. That is a concept dog lovers can’t wrap their head around. Street dogs can be far more fiercely loyal sometimes. Just a little bit of love goes a long way. Some might argue, that one can never tell how a street dog will react to them. Well, that holds true for pets too, in fact, any living being, including us humans, the so called evolved species.

Also, one can’t really blame it on these poor souls for not immediately trusting everyone, considering the history of humans, and how we ever so often treat them with disgrace. There are far too many people who are just so used to throwing stones at the mere sight of a street dog, it is understandable, that they will be wary if not aggressive when it comes to people. Not just that, there are so many instances of street dogs being guardians of humans, voluntarily. Almost every security guard can tell anyone of a street dog that gives them company on their rounds with absolute unquestionable faith.

One probably just gave it a piece of bread at some point of time, rest assured, it will almost certainly look forward to seeing them with its tail wagging, every time one comes around. That genuine delight at their sight is a rare occurrence to spot even amongst the closest of friends or family. It might even protect one from other rather aggressive counterparts if one is even the least bit kind to it. Sadly, that’s something a street dog does not get to experience too often.
There have been cases, where a shared love of dogs becomes the founding stone of many a friendships. One just can’t get enough of the fun and funny stories of their behavior, when one is a true dog lover. And it’s a certainty, there’s never a dearth of such stories. The innocent pranks played on it to maybe just the way it was seen sleeping one time, are heartwarming tales. And these are not restricted to one’s own pet. A friend’s pet, a neighbor’s pet, or maybe one just seen on its daily walk, or even the street dogs. A true dog lover is offended by the use of the term ‘street dog’, because for him, they are all the same, just as amazing.

1525164_10151939561046481_1815631601_n

Everything about all of them has the potential to make one’s day, no matter how rotten it has been. Coming home from a bad day at work, the sight of a dog on its back in the mud could easily make one laugh. There really is no need to enumerate the scientifically proven health benefits of being with dogs. Not just psychological and mental, but also physical.
One may probably understand if there’s a genuine pathological inability to being around dogs, such as allergies, and the consequent ‘hatred’, but otherwise there really is no justifiable reason for not loving them. Unless one has really young kids who run to them the moment they enter the door (they too eventually stop doing that as they grow older), there is no one else but a dog that does that all its life. People may forget one’s love and kindness, but a dog never does. It’ll cherish it for as long as it lives and return it multiple times over. Real life stories have been made into movies,

Hachiko and Red to name two, portraying the bravery, love and loyalty a dog has for its owner. Their love towards their owner continues even after their death. There is no sight as heart wrenching as when a dog cries out for its master. Not only on one’s death but even if it’s locked away from them. True dog lovers consider it almost criminal when a dog is locked outside the house or in the balcony or left alone and uncared for when the owners decide to go on a vacation. If taught kindly it will learn not to ruin one’s things when inside the house. It always knows when one needs his own space and when one need its company. They have a gift of never letting one feel lonely even in the direst of circumstances. And this is one of those things that people really need in today’s times.

My Dogs are my best friends and the most fabulous teachers ever (after my parents of course), because I sincerely feel, that school failed to teach me anything that could come handy in my day to day life, except how to make new friends and fight my own battles. But my Dogs have taught me a lot, from showing me how to give unconditional love, to becoming a faithful friend and the most important lesson, the lesson of loyalty.

While growing up like every other teenager, I too had my set of hurdles that I needed to overcome on my own. Even I found myself gripped by the strong hands of the monster called depression and unending sadness & temporary defeatism lured my tears out of their hiding place, every now and then, which is at least six out of the seven days of the week. But what stopped me from falling apart, was the tender love and support lent to me by my dear little friend Muffin (since I shared nothing with my parents).

Muffin was a Shih-Tzu Dog, a long coated dog with a Chinese origin. The name ‘Shih-Tzu’ literally means ‘Lion Dog’ in Chinese and the breed was christened thus, as they were bred to resemble the Lion, just how it is depicted in the traditional Chinese art. The breed is also known as the Tibetan Lion Dog, but whether the Shih-Tzu, traces its origin back to China or Tibet is debatable. The history of the breed adamantly states that it originated in China around 800 BC. Also its genetics are closely related to Wolves. The Dogs were treated as though they were a priceless treasure, by the Royalties of China. Maybe that is the reason behind the Chinese guarding them jealously and their reluctance and blunt refusal in selling them or trading them. Well, I seem to empathize with them, since the breed has an adorable charm and not to forget those very manipulative eyes.

shih-tzu1

As far as the behavior goes, well Muffin was a very prissy dog, The dog was so full of himself and so stubborn, that if by mistake our dog boy gave him ‘Vegetarian’ food (plain milk with the Indian bread) , Muffin would put mud into the bowl and keep nudging until it reaches the point where the dog boy would usually go and sit while the dogs had their food, and begin barking so loud till my mother got his food changed by adding some boiled egg or chicken pieces in it, only then would His Highness Muffin finish his meal *Phew*.

But generally the Shih-Tzu is an affectionate dog, very outgoing and highly alert. They are also very clean dogs and hate the presence of mud on their bodies. Muffin used to love his baths. If they are under trained, they may resort to biting and nipping if they get irritated in the presence of pokey strangers.

The Shih-Tzu is a long coated dog and needs constant care such as brushing the coat at least twice a day as it gets matted very fast and matted fur leads to the clotting of blood, clipping of nails as long nails may get stuck in the coat, it’s eyes are very sensitive too, and so the tuft of hair falling over their eyes protects them from getting damaged, it can be trimmed but not cut to a very short length. I needed to cut Muffin’s hair from around his paws and mouth area as getting food and muck off them can be quite a hassle. Also, they need a cool room to stay in.

Now coming back to the topic, Muffin was my best companion, like any other dog to its master. Sometimes I got really angry with him for littering in my room; some of us even raise our hands on our dogs. We do it under the pretense of scolding or training our dog in order to prevent it from dirtying our house the next time. But what we don’t realize is that, every time we hit our bud, we break its tender heart. You may find it difficult to understand, so let’s make it easy by going back in time and stopping at the moment when you first brought your bud home. For you it was just a dog, but for him you were its world; his master, his best friend, mother, father, sibling and everything else (mostly his nanny but never mind). Remember, the moment it felt hungry, it came to you, the moment it felt sleepy, it looked for your lap or your bed or may have expected you to take it to its bed and make it comfortable, at least my Muffin did so. Our dogs are dependent on us the moment they promise to be loyal to us , protect us and be on our side no matter what happens and so basic courtesy demands that we make a promise to them too, the promise of loving them, keeping them safe and most importantly keeping them away from any kind of pain. A dog is no less than a child so if we can be so cautious about not hurting our child’s feelings, then why do we forget that our innocent dogs have tender hearts too? Don’t go by the size of the dog, they all have tender hearts, believe me, a dog as huge as the English Mastiff, would stop eating its food on being yelled at by its master.

Now come back to the present, when you raise your hand on your bud, you let him down, you break his heart and crush his hopes, now don’t get all scared thinking it might not love you any more, dogs and all the other animals are born with hearts of gold, they would suffer your bad behavior but never stop loving you, because the word ‘Abandon’ does not exist in their dictionary. Also, don’t think I am encouraging you to hit your dog or take your dog’s love for granted, because if you do, it will only reflect your ruthless conscience. There are many other ways to train your dog without hitting it such as the paper roll training trick, wherein you roll a newspaper and hit it on the ground or your thigh (now don’t be a sissy, it doesn’t hurt!), while making the dog sniff the litter it is responsible for. Dogs are sensitive to noise and they often get irritated or a little scared every time they hear the newspaper’s noise. Once you’ve repeated this act twice or thrice (because dogs don’t get trained overnight, it requires hell amount of patience), the dog will start associating ‘litter inside the house’ with ‘irritating noise’ and eventually stop dirtying your house.

shih-tzu2

Our dogs are very attached to us, since our appreciation means the world to them, they are forever trying to impress us and our company is what they desire the most (second to their food of course). So when your dog dirties your house, clasp a leash to its collar and tie your dog in a corner away from you, make sure you keep its bed and bowl of water next to it. But before you do that you should make your dog sniff the litter, so it knows why it’s being punished. Mind you, it will take long for your dog to start associating ‘litter inside the house’ with being ‘away from the master’. It will eventually start abiding by your rules.

You should also try toilet training your pup by putting it on newspaper every time it gets restless so it knows where to relieve itself, cleaning the newspapers is more convenient. The younger they are, the faster they learn.

Patience is the key to a well-trained dog. So every time you lose your temper and patience while training your dog imagine how your child would feel on being slapped and if by chance you’re single then remember how you felt on being slapped.

All this I have learned from years of training dogs and through my best bud Muffin. He taught me, that the connections that exist between a master and his dog are all joined to a single key called ‘Love’

31654_1459243318693_1161717917_31354517_1519263_n.

This is a tribute to my dead friend my Muffin. Where ever you are, your are missed. RIP.

Tulza.
