When you want a dog, you may want it for so many reasons. You may want him as a companion, a protector, a playmate or you may be ambitious to show off your dog. Your reasons of having a dog is the key difference to the kind of dog you should own. Dogs come in all size and shapes like everything that keeps us happy (e.g., Chocolates). You should think about how much time you will get to give your dog a good work out, think about how much time you will get to train the dog. If you are a busy person and cannot give enough time to train your dog then you better dream on of having a big fierce dog as they need more training to sociable.

People mostly avoid having female dogs because of their reproductive cycle which causes heavy vaginal discharge and some surgery also are needed sometimes. But female dogs are gentler and they can build a bond with children very easily. They are watchful and alert and have fewer tendencies to go outside of their own surroundings. On the other paw, male dogs are aggressive, heavy, and larger in size and they provide more protection as a watchdog.

Dogs with long hair require proper grooming to avoid shedding inside the house while dogs with short hair requires warm clothing to keep them warm in Winter.

Which Breed do you want ?

Now it’s important to choose the breed. here are some help for you.

Sporting Group:

SPORTINGGROUP

They are active and alert and they make a great family dog. They have remarkable instincts for water and woods; they can actively participate in bird hunting and field activities. They have a lot of energy and they have to be exercised regularly. This group includes pointer, spaniels, retrievers and setters.

Example: English setter, Irish setter, Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Pointer etc.

Hound Group:

HOUNDGROUP

Hound dogs are potential hunters. Some of them use their power of smelling to track animals down. They have relentless stamina. Some hound dogs produce a unique sound known as “baying”. This group is large, from fierce Rhodesian Ridgebacks to cute little beagles they all are in the same group.

Example: Afghan Hound, Basset Hound, Beagle, Blood Hound, English Foxhound, Pharaoh Hound etc.

Working Group:

WORKINGGROUP

These dogs have been great companions to mankind. Sled dogs like Siberian Huskies, fisherman dogs like Newfound Lands, all are in this group. Mankind has depended on them throughout the ages. They guard property, pull a sled, rescue people from water, they are assets to mankind. They are intelligent, quick to learn and strong, these abilities alone make them outstanding when trained well. But these dogs don’t make much of family pet.

Example: Alaskan Malamute, Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, Boxer, German Pinscher, Bullmastiff, Komondor, Newfoundland, Rottweiler, Tibetan Mastiff etc.

Terrier Group:

TERRIERGROUP

Terriers’ ancestors were trained to hunt and kill vermin so they continue to carry their ancestors’ spirit and energy. Most terriers have curly coats that need special grooming. They are very energetic and engaging so their owners have to be equally energetic. They have little tolerance for other animals.

Example: American Staffordshire terrier, Irish terrier, Bull terrier, Fox terrier, Australian terrier, Bedlington terrier etc.

Toy Group:

TOYGROUP

These dogs are small but you should not be fooled by their appearances some of them are too tough. Don’t agree? Try confronting the barks of an angry Chihuahua. They make good companions. Every group has their small sized dogs so you should always give a thought of getting small dogs than a huge one if you are living in a city apartment.

Example: Poodle, Shih Tzu, pug, Maltese, Miniature Pinscher etc.

Non Sporting Group:

NONSPORTINGGROUP

These dogs have different personalities, not made for much running and chasing though. Their personalities vary from Chow chow to Dalmatian. Poodle, Lhasa Apso can also be included in this group.

Example: Tibetan spaniel, Tibetan Terrier, Shiba Inu, Chinese Shar Pei, Bull dog etc.

Herding Group:

HERDINGGROUP

All of them share an incredible ability to control the movement of other animals. No matter how small they are they can always control a herd. Most of them are family pets but as their basic instinct prompts, they gently herd their families especially the children. Generally, they make fabulous companion and trained dog.

Example: Border Collie, Collie, German Shepherd dog, Shetland Sheep dog, Beauceron, Old English Sheep dog etc.

Miscellaneous Group:

MISCELLANEOUS GROUP

MISCELLANEOUS GROUP

There are still so many not-so-popular dog breeds.

Example: Spanish Water Dog, Coton De Tulear, Azawakh, Bergamasco, Miniature American Shepherd etc.

Now it is upto you which breed you want. Choose wisely!
