DOGGY SNIFF:

SMELLY DOG – The ability of  detecting odors that are existent around us everywhere, which even a normal human is incapable of smelling, is something that can be done very efficiently by a canine. How one generally classifies humans ability to classify every living/ non-living object present around the world as the most dominant feature in one’s body, a dog’s nose is what generally gets the dominion status that supersedes his face structure.it might be hard to believe this is true, but what one should realize is that however much information we may derive after “viewing” things, literally, is what a dog does by SMELLING.

SMELLY DOG NOSE FEATURES:

Having two giant olfactory bulbs which is attached to the canine’s brain which helps it decode every smell that they catch up on. This very bulb weighs approximately 60 grams which is like four times as much as a human’s olfactory bulbs. Taking into account this very fact that a canine brain is one-tenth of the size of a human brain, which results in them having forty times as much of its brain which is designated to smell as we humans do. Thus a dog’s smell is always put on a higher pedestal than a human’s capability of smelling. To an extent that it is considered to be a 100,000 times better.

HOW A DOG’S NOSE AND BRAIN LOOKS LIKE FROM THE INSIDE.

A dog usually has a nose pattern made up of ridges and dimples that, in compilation with the nostril openings allows for a NOSE PRINT to be formed in a dog, which is known to be the only unique feature present in each dog and which represents the same uniqueness pertaining to a human’s fingerprints. These nose prints helps owners find their dogs if lost, and in many companies registering the nose print of the company’s dog in order to follow the same pattern used by the kennel clubs all around the world.

Dogs contain with themselves the ability to smell up to 40 feet underground, which allows them to detect leaky gas pipes, smelling insects underground. In the United States, canines are utilised in detecting termite infestations. Thus, dogs can smell up a whiff of other creatures, in a jiffy.

All of this is possible for a canine, due to his WET SNOUT. This organ is the working mechanism in a dog’s body that allows it to carry an amazing smelling capability. The mucus that a dog keeps on putting in his nose- allows for his snout to remain wet and it is believed that a dog releases a pint of wet mucus everyday on his nose.

WHAT ALL CAN A DOG SMELL?

Prior to contrary beliefs, dogs do not have ESP’S that allows them to have an external manifestation of an ulterior characteristic, but are born to have such fast track noses that allows them to smell the following:

• Canines can smell human fingerprints that may be even a week old.

• Canines can smell fear- and represent the same via the external manifestation of looking anxious/ frightened when the fearful dog leaves the room

• It has been observed by famous scientists that canines can even smell electricity

• As we all are well aware of, canines can easily pick on human’s odour and which is how they associate themselves with an unknown human entity when adopted, fostered by an owner allowing them to track them for long distances, if lost.

• Research proves that canines have THE SICK SENSE: allowing them to predict sickness faced by humans, sickness from flu to cancer may be detected by them, which goes vary from our noses.

DETECTION DOGS:

What differentiates detection dogs from normal, homely domestic dogs is simply this- their purpose.

Detection Dogs are even called Sniffer Dogs and are generally used for the purpose of tracking thieves, killers- police purposes and may even be used to smell substances such as illegal drugs, explosives, termites, currency, mold, mobile phones blood etc. They are even used in California as biological research tool for wildlife.

There are detection dogs specifically for BED BUGS used by governments of countries like Norway, United States giving the dogs the environment of different dogs to detect bed bugs in areas for easy, quicker eradication of the same.

Sniffer Dogs are known to be accurate more than 95% of the time, and face failure only when the smell itself has been tampered with. In the case of bed bugs detection, they are known to be accurate 97.5% of the time and face failure when the cast skins, bed bugs skeletons have been destroyed or have been in the place for more than 10 years.

Sniffer dogs are capable of smelling blood, accurately even after it has been scrubbed off- up to 15 days of it being scrubbed off.

Many legislation’s have restricted the use of these detection dogs, banning them from being used for unscrupulous work and research. What generally happens in some places is that these dogs get roped into working long hours, and are not even taken care of properly, sniffer dogs require higher nutrition than normal dogs and if not provided, may become ferocious.
