One of the most common breeds of dogs in the world is the Pomeranian. And why not? Its small in size easy going and does not require a lot of fussing unlike some other breeds. The Pomeranian also called a Pom pom or even simply Pom is a breed of the Spitz type. It is said to have originated in Central Europe, in the Pomerania region, which now comes as a part of northern Poland and east of Germany, hence giving it the name. Its size is so small, that it is classified as a toy dog, although its ancestors, i.e. the Spitz were much larger, specifically the German Spitz. In fact, it often goes by the name of ‘dwarf Spitz’, in some countries.

The very size makes it absolutely adorable to have and to hold. Its popularity can be credited to the large number of royal owners this breed has had for the past few centuries, as early as the 18th century. Also the fact that since celebrities these days have made owning a small dog so fashionable, everyone wants to be in trend, and a Pomeranian fits the bill perfectly. In fact the size of the breed reduced by about 50% during Queen Victoria’s lifetime alone. What is interesting is the breed seems to have a fairly good lifespan for its size, about 12 to 16 years.  The breed is considered among the top 15 most popular breeds in the USA and simultaneously its popularity is growing worldwide.

These compact dogs weigh about 1.9 to 3.5 kgs and tend to have an abundant textured coat, set high and flat, yet as fluffy as ever. They have a unique ruff on the neck and a fringe of fur on their hindquarters. The earliest known Pomeranians were mostly if not exclusively white, brown or black. But after Queen Victoria adopted a small red Pomeranian, this color too gained prominence. With time, a large variety of colors were seen in the breed. Some solid, others were a blend or a combination of various colors. The most common colors are white, orange, cream and black. Other colors include tan, spotted, brindle, blue and sable. Merle is a distinct color recently developed, which gives a mottled effect. Although there are certain colors considered unacceptable according to some breeding standards. The eyes, nose and paw pads also can be uniquely colored as a consequence of breeding. Pomeranians have the largest variety of colors compared to any other breed.

images (1)

Because of their thick double coat, breeders recommend daily grooming in order to maintain its quality and since it is fairly easy. Special care needs to be taken during the shedding season of their undercoats, which happens about twice a year, when the coat tends to knot and tangle easily. The undercoat is usually softer, while the outer is long, straight and just a tad harsh. To maintain the gloss and softness, its better if the fur is trimmed every 1-2 months. What makes Pomeranians particularly loved by kids is that they are a very friendly breed. They love to play. They are inherently lively, and this energy more than makes up for their relatively small size.

They also make decent guard dogs, considering they are highly prone to barking at any new stimuli. This alertness makes them susceptible to any change in their environment. They are aware about everything around them, often excessively defensive about their territory. Their intelligence ensures a good response to training, which is aided by their extrovert nature. But at the same time they are well known for their ability to get what they want from their owners. They love to be the centre of everyone’s attention, which comes off as aggression and dominance. If not trained well, they tend to bark excessively, which makes them unadvisable for the elderly. Toys come in handy when you need them to be alone.

One advantage of their lightweight build is that this breed is not known to have hip dysplasia as commonly as other breeds do. With good nutrition and sufficient exercise this dog lives a sturdy, healthy life. Most of the ailments are a result of insufficient care and grooming, such as regular cleaning of their ears, teeth and eyes. It’s advisable to feed them dry food, as early tooth loss is a common problem. On an average a pom breed is about 1-3 puppies per litter, among the smallest compared to other breeds. Some other common ailments are related to bones and muscles, such as patella and slip disc. This is painful in the initial stages, but it later subsides. Respiratory problems such as tracheal collapse are another commonly found ailment amongst Pomeranians. Most common symptom of which is coughing that worsens by hot weather, excitement or exercise. Testicular disease, ie, cryporchidism is treatable by surgery. But the most common disease involves complete or partial hair loss and hyperpigmentation.

A Pomeranian is well-suited as a companion for everyone. Its loving nature makes it an ideal lap dog. Pomeranians are often used as therapy dogs. In fact their adorable appearance alone can make them extremely popular, as recently witnessed in case of Boo, that became an internet sensation, based solely on its cuteness.

People don’t usually keep rodents as pets. Even if they do it is usually a guinea pig or a hamster. Rats and mice are also petted but rarely. But if you have recently bought one of these puffy yet delicate beings you need to know how to take their proper care. Big animals like cats and dogs, are easy to take care in terms of food, cleaning, bonding and petting. Coming to the rodents, even they require love and bonding which may turn out to be difficult considering their size and behavior.

Here are few points to help guide how to develop a better relation with your little rodent.

  1. Cages

r1

The size of the cage depends upon the size and number of pets you keep. Hamster adults are about 6 inches so a 12*18 size cage would be fine for a single hamster. Hamsters are solitary animals, hence should be kept a hamster per cage.  Gerbils are petit and grow up to just four inches. They are social animals so it is better to keep them in a pair or a group. A 12*24 size cage would provide enough space for a pair. Mice make it to just 3 inches and like gerbils tend to stay in pairs or groups. They need a small 12*18 size cage although the size can be varied if you increase the count. Rats and guinea pigs on the other hand reach a length of 8 and 10 inches respectively. You can get a cage of size 24*36 or can even make a little home with the household items for the guinea pigs, your rat my chew off its home, hence a cage is better option.

  1. Bedding and Accessories

r2

The bedding shouldn’t be made of an absorbent material. Normally pine wood shavings and paper-based pallets are comfortable for your pet and even keep the bad odor away. Make sure you don’t provide wired bedding for your rodent as spending time on wired base leads to bumble-foot, a bacterial infection associated with feet. Rats tend to litter waste in one corner of the cage, you need to make sure you clean the cage regularly, at least once a week and restore the bedding back. Rats and mice like to climb over the cage. You can add certain toys and accessories to the cage for your rodent’s playtime. Some rodents like to run on wheels while others don’t. You can get some toys which your rats and mice can chew upon and rotate them so that it doesn’t feel bored.

  1. Food

r3

Hamsters, guinea pigs can be given similar diets like whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits and other healthy things. Pellet food is considered best for your pet. You can also try human food, as long as it is healthy and not junk food. Dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes, so sugar and fatty foods should be avoided. If you have a rat or mice low fat meal can be given occasionally including cheese and nuts apart from bread, rice yogurt. A low fat high fiber diet is preferable. Rats get tempted with sweet food items like sugar and chocolate but this tendency of developing a sweet tooth must be avoided. Make sure you give clean drinking water to your rodent. The water should be changed regularly and take care that bowls don’t get contaminated with algae. Your rodent requires water regularly and may be ill otherwise.

  1. Cleaning and grooming

r4

Rats don’t usually require cleaning and grooming as they clean themselves by licking. But if you feel the fur becoming dirty or the tail turning black with dirt, you can give it a slightly warm bath. Bathing should be done once per month only if necessary. Same applies to hamsters, guinea pigs and other rodents as well. Take care that the water doesn’t go the eyes. DO NOT put shampoo anywhere around eyes. Clean the face with a damp towel. For the first time, the bath can be intimidating for your pet and it may try to run off. You can first make it comfortable by placing it in an inch or two of water and let it get used to the wetness. Use only a drop of shampoo and not more than that. Rinse and little and wash off. Clean the tail with a soft brush in case of a rat, being long and skinny it often gets dirty. You can even trim off the nails if you think they are too long by using normal nail-cutter but be careful with not to cut the pink skin. A vet can be consulted in this case.

  1. Playtime

r6

It is better that kids don’t handle these rodents themselves as they are delicate creatures. Squeezing and dropping down can cause harm to your pet. Though they can be social, but rats, mice and gerbils are generally nocturnal and can be disturbing throughout the night. They may not like getting disturbed during the day, as they sleep most of the time. They are playful but not that responsive, though they can be tamed by frequent handling and spending some time with your pet both when inside and outside its cage. Get few toys for your rodents to chew upon and when you leave them out make sure you don’t keep any valuables in their way as they can chew off almost anything.
Spend time with your pet and don’t just keep it because it is cute, furry and adorable. Take proper care of it and let it enjoy your company.

It’s soft and cuddly. It’s absolutely adorable. It comes in so many colors. It is always there. These are just some of the common qualities between a cocker spaniel and a cloud, primarily the appearance. Its mainly because of their curled up thick coat. These cute little darlings are become extremely common everywhere. They are incredibly friendly and lovable. Their size makes them a viable choice in with the reducing home sizes in the growing cities. They are beautiful in their own right, and so poised, no wonder they are a regular feature at dog shows and the like.

Originally bred as hunting dogs, their name was derived from their use as a preferred choice for hunting the Eurasian Woodcock. It was first bred in the United Kingdom, where they were known as the English Cocker Spaniel. Eventually they were brought in to the USA and there a new breed originated, called the American Cocker Spaniel, where they were trained to hunt the American Woodcock.  Both the breeds have similar coat colors and health issues with a few exceptions. Their existence can be dated to as far back as the 14th century. From here they were exported to various other countries in time and their popularity began its ascent. Spaniels may be considered related to hounds and originating from Spain, lending it the name. They were often bred as gun dogs. With their strong sense of smell they could not only find prey and instigate them into flight, only to be shot down by the gunmen, but the cocker spaniels sight smell were so sound, that they could also find and retrieve the bird with a soft mouth.

images (2)

Cocker spaniels were first classified as such, if the Spaniels weighed less than 25kgs. This was until the year 1901, after which the weight range changed and accommodated larger or heavier dogs too. According to the current standards, a typical male grows to a height of 37-41 centimeters, whereas a female could grow as tall as 34 to 39 centimeters, based on their breed. The English Cocker Spaniel tends to be taller than its American counterpart. The English variety has a narrower head and chest, whereas the American has a shorter back and muzzle and a domed head.  An English cocker spaniel weighs from 13 to 15 kilograms and the American breed weighs between 11-14kgs. There have been several instances when a cocker spaniel was awarded the best in show at some of the most prestigious dog shows of the world.

Cocker spaniels come in a variety of colors to satisfy and indulge all preferences. Black, liver, white, red and golden are some of the most common solids. But at the same time, cocker spaniels are available as a blend of these colors as well, such as roans, tans and sometimes even tricolors. All- white cocker spaniels are extremely rare, and are often specially bred, but sometimes a darker parent could also give birth to an all-white cocker spaniel. Cocker spaniels are ranked amongst the most popular breeds, both in the US and the UK, and it only seems to be increasing. Cocker spaniels are also categorized as those with show strains and working strains. Show strains as the name suggests, are bred almost exclusively for the purpose to conform to standards as part of dog shows. The working strain on the other hand is meant only for their working ability. They tend to be larger with flatter heads, shorter ears, and less feathering compared to their show strain counterparts.

images (1)

Cocker spaniels with their long floppy ears are prone to several defects of the ear canal along with the regular ailments common amongst dogs. The fold of the ear prevents air from entering the ear, making the atmosphere warm and susceptible to growth of unwanted organisms. Ear inflammation, swelling, can cause the ear to get shut. This can be caused due to parasites, microorganisms, foreign bodies, tumors, ear mites, ticks or even fleas that live and fester in a dog’s ear canal. Yeast infections are extremely common, hence adequate care needs to be taken, if you notice inflammation or pus-discharge. A foul odor, unusual shaking or scratching of the head by the dog is also a sure sign of something being wrong. Other common ailments include hip displasia, cancer, and even eye disorders. PRA or progressive retinal atrophy has been documented in many dogs, and affect’s a dog’s eyesight. In severe cases, it could even cause blindness, which could also be caused by glaucoma. Cataracts are also fairly common.

Cocker spaniels with their joyful, friendly demeanor, love the company of humans. They are playful and energetic and are loved by kids especially because of that soft, shiny, huggable coat. Their size and adaptability makes them a favorite choice as pets in most households, as that signifies that they are low maintenance. This does not reduce the rewards that one reaps as a sign of their love, loyalty and gratitude towards you. They can be amazing companions for individuals, and are amazing family dogs. They love to play outdoors and are amazing partners to health fans. one really doesn’t need any other reason to fall irrevocably in love with this breed.

Small rodents are adorable but selecting one of them can be tricky. They are considered to be as favourites by the familes. Different rodents have varied requirements for social interaction, time and space. I am telling you about the most common rodents that are kept in households and afterwards, you can decide if one if these adorable creatures is the right companion for you.
1. HAMSTERS :-

download (1)
They are cute creatures having an average life – span of 2-3 years. Usually, the adult hamsters are 6 inches tall and their cages should be 12 inches tall ( 12 x 18 ) which is twice the size of hamsters. They are very active and loves to exercise so if you are going to get one, then make sure to buy a wheel for running too.
If they are not handled carefully, then it can become defensive and might bite too, so be careful before giving it to younger children. Children of under 8 years of age should not allowed to handle this pet and children over 8 years of age must always be supervised by adults.
2. GERBILS :-

356054738_05e2ecc5a6_z

The average life – span of gerbils are 2 – 3 years. Their body length is about four inches and a furry tail which is as long as the length of their body. They are very engrossing creatures and fitted for mostly all the families. They rarely bite so you need not to worry about your children but do not leave them alone with it in order to be safe. Sometimes, gerbils are mistaken for rats or mice but they actually behave and look different from them. You can provide a lot of things for climbing such as wood pieces, ladders or platforms. You van actually be entertained by watching them play. They should not be kept alone in the cage, you can put another gerbil in the cage of the same sex. They starts breeding from three months of age and can produce 5 – 10 babies in every 24 days so its better if you keep the same sex of gerbils in the cage.

3. GUINEA PIGS :-

Two_adult_Guinea_Pigs_(Cavia_porcellus)
Their average life – span is usually five to seven years. These are the perfect starter for those older kids who knows enough proper handling techniques of pet as they rarely bite. They are very social animals and if you put another guinea pigs, they might become great friends and will play, from which you can be entertained. However keeping the same sex of guinea pigs together is not recommended. Try to buy a bigger cage for it, but not too big. Also keep away the cage from hot temperatures, otherwise it can cause a heatstroke. If you think he is sick, immediately take him to the vet, symptoms can include – sneezing, coughing, diarrhea, or inactive.
4. MICE :-

Mice_(1)
These creatures live on an average of one to two years. Most of the people thinks that mice are very ordinary creatures, I guess they have never seen mice playing as they are very playful and curious creatures and you can be relaxed by watching them play.
They are independent creatures and do not need you to entertain themselves but they can entertain you very well! But they DO need your affection and love. If you have a younger child then do not let him to handle mouse without your supervision. Mice love to explore everything around their surroundings instead of just sitting on the lap.
5. RATS :-

Rat_agouti
They are very affectionate, clean and intelligent animals, they can easily bond with human – beings almost in the same way that dogs do. Children, too can play with rats but under adult supervision but children must be taught how to handle animals as they are not toys and must be treated with respect.
You can get a wire cage for them as it suited besr for them because they enjoy climbing and the wire cage is ventilated enough.
6. CHINCHILLAS :-

Chinchilla_lanigera_reared
They are very attractive rodents and their body length is generally about ten inches with a long five – inches tail. They can make wonderful pets for people who knows how to handle these creatures properly. They can bite if they feel threatened or scared. They do not like noise around their surroundings and can be stressed by too much of noise so you should keep the noise volume minimum as much as possible. Their cages should be large enough as they enjoys running and playing.

Owning and caring of a rodent can be of great fun but it is a big commitment and respondibility in terms of finances, care, affection and time. Before buying rats, ask yourself whether you can care for them properly for probably more than two years or not. They are not like toys, you have to handle them carefully, also do not let your children to handle them without your supervision, If you are ready for caring and handling properly these creatures then go for it!

Have you ever thought why is it always a dog when we talk about the pet? Do you know why the dog takes a first role in the pet list?

Well, whenever we ask the people a question like, ‘what kind of pet do you have? Or which pet do you like the most?’ they usually reply ‘I have a dog, named so-so …Or I love dog very much than other…’ Have you ever thought why it always is? Yes, it is all because of its distinct characteristics.

Why-it-always-dog-2

Generally, the dogs have unique characteristics and habitats among the other pets. Though it is a second class creator, it has tendency to draw the people towards it. The physical structure of the dog is more appealing than other. They got to have a long lovely nose at the front and an erotic tail at the back. And, they got to have a neither not too long nor too short tubical (tube + cylindrical) body structure with four beam based leg at four corners. And, we could find anal part at the rear end of the body. And, if it is a female dog (bitch), the feeding nipples will be seen over the body under the tubical structure. This is the way the dogs look like.

Why-it-always-dog1

What do you think when you hear the word ‘the dog’? Cute?? Lovely?? Caring?? Ah… Each people have distinct thought on the dogs. But the similar and the most crucial fact on the dogs are ‘the Faith’. Yes, the faith is the most impact on the dogs. It is more faithful than the other pet, even to the human. The faith of the dogs can’t be compared to any other pets, which is primarily outstanding. It is all, may be, because of its incomparable faith, the dogs have been chosen as the pet (first pet) in the early period. Yes, the dog is the very first animal announced as a domestic pet, which can be treated as a dearie.

The dogs have a lot of and the great magnificence characters, other than the faith, to draw the people towards it. The dogs are quite good in hearing, smelling, hunting, showing care and love, guarding, playing, and searching and so on. Yes, really the dogs got some skills and their own way to tend the people. That’s why, the dogs were considered as ‘the people’s bestie’.

At sometimes and somewhere, the people call the dogs as ‘the people’s slave’ because the dogs are really faithful and do the work suchlike what its master demand. The dogs are well known pet that always go with its master’s word as such. The dogs would have seriously got some strong skills in following its master. The dogs, not only follow its master, it do care about and show its love for its master.

Impute to its magnificence, the dogs were used in various sector such as, in police department, security guard, sports, showcase and so on. The dogs, not only used in various sector, it have being used by individual need too, like, guarding the land, guarding the sheep from wolf (traditional fact), hunting and finding, playing, showcasing, etc. Seriously, the dogs are more useful than the people imagine. In Korea, in China and in Vietnam, the people serving the dogs as a food in the restaurant and street shop. Yes, they even named the dish as ‘Gaegogi’. The way they providing the dogs are as a meat and as a soup to the people. They have thought that, the dog meat and its soup are really good for health and it must be a medicine for some unknown disease. They still have thought that the dogs would have some more specialties like, for beauty case, cosmetics, etc.

Though the dogs were made as a dish, still the dogs have some favorite dish to be eaten. The most likely food for the dogs was meat. But, the dogs come under Omnivores; it could be able to eat vegetables and grains along. The dogs commute between Omnivore and Carnivores, according to its master. If the dogs were fed only by meat, then it grownup as Carnivores, else it fed by meat along with vegetables and grain, then it grownup as Omnivores. The dogs classifications are purely depend on its master.

As a pet, the dogs should have something like to do and something liked to be done. In such case, the dogs were loved to play with the ball. Yes, they like to catch or find the thrown ball or dish (a flat circular plate shaped) by its master. This is the most favorite game to the dogs. And seriously, the dogs are loved to be cuddled by its master. Though its grownup, the dogs were loved to be pampered. The cuddling points for the dogs are below neck and rear end of the ear. These are sensitive and secretive point for the dogs to flatter.

Ah… May be, that’s why, it always is ‘the dog’? Yes, of course, it always is, because of this. Though the dogs can be any variety or any breed but the fact and magnificence are similar in the almost cases. That’s why; I love dog and possess a dog, named Viki.

Have you ever thought what it would be like to own a lion as a pet. Well then, this is your chance. But there is a catch. This pet will be a miniature version of a lion. It only has an unmistakable similarity in appearance, but it really is a dog. Not just a dog, but one of the cutest dogs you must have ever set your sights on. This breed is absolutely adorable in not half as ferocious as a real lion, which is just another point of attraction. Those cute eyes look like buttons in the middle of that face that resembles the face of a lion, complete with a mane. In fact the Chow Chow  originated in Northern China, where it was known as Songshi Quan, which translates to puffy-lion dog.

Chow Chows are also called Chows. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world believed to be used as a model for the Foo dog. The Foo dog is the traditional stone guardians found in front of most Buddhist temples and palaces. They are said to be descendants of wolves. They were first found in the high steppe regions of Siberia or Mongolia and went on to be used in China, Mongolia and Tibet. Evidence points to existence of dogs that looked like Chow Chows as far back in time as 150BC. They were essential companions to the Mongolian armies in their various invasions in China, Europe and even the Middle East.

Their original purpose was herding, hunting, pulling and guarding. They were then used as general-purpose working dogs with the demise of the aforesaid activities with time. They were also bred for human consumption. Not only that, they were also used as sled dogs and war dogs, because of their ability to pull heavy loads and their large size.  It has been said that breeds like Pomeranians and elkhounds have descended from Chow chows. Interestingly enough, it is believed that Queen Victoria’s pet Chow inspired the creation of the first teddy bears, due to their cute and cuddly appearance. She was so in love with her chow that she would carry it everywhere with her, which apparently went against the royal of code of conduct, which lead to the idea of a teddy bear that looked similar to the pet.

The Chow has a characteristic blue black tongue and a unique shaggy lion-like appearance of their face. This sturdily built dog has a square profile. Their short triangular ears with rounded tips perfectly compliment their lovable appearance. As a consequence of their origin being from the coldest parts of the world, they have a very dense double coat that is rough or smooth, which looks mane-like as it is particularly thicker in the neck region. Chows exist in colors such as red, black, fawn, cinnamon, cream or even blue, although not all of them are acceptable color schemes among show dogs, nor are they all available in all countries. Their deep set, almond shaped eyes have the capacity to make you melt. Their tail too is distinctly curly and thick. Their hind legs tend to be unusually straight that gives them a stilted appearance.

images (2)

They are fiercely protective of their owners and their property, and are usually discerning of strangers. They might be unusually aggressive or even extremely timid, which gives them cat-like attributes. They are fairly passive in their temperament and so can be conveniently kept as house pets, as they don’t tend to be too active. But at the same time, one must make sure, that the chow gets sufficient physical exercise to avoid lethargy and boredom. It has direct consequences on its health and restlessness. Once a routine is set that involves Daily exercises, the chow will look forward to it, as that could be the only source of activity for it. Ideally they weigh between 45 to 70 pounds and grow to a height of about 17 to 20 inches. Fleas, cancer, glaucoma and hip dysplasia are some of the most common ailments in chows.

They can be extremely stubborn in nature, and can develop attachment to certain things as they grow. It is extremely loyal towards the family members. They are usually calm and well behaved, but they are also not particular fans of training, which is crucial especially in their early years to teach them to value those who love them. In order to avoid aggressiveness and the over protective behavior, it is advisable to expose them to other animals and people as a means of increased social interaction. But some dogs can be easy going enough to seem aloof towards everyone except their owners. They are considered as one of the most high risk dogs, hence, it is better to keep them leashed to avoid unnecessary tussles with cats or small dogs or even strangers, but with training this too can be avoided.

Chows continue to be extremely popular pets among dog owners, mainly due to their cuteness factor. Apart from feeding, training and grooming chows are fairly low maintenance and yet are adored at dog shows. It is no wonder then that they are a favorite choice among several celebrities too from Walt Disney’s wife to Janet Jackson, and Sigmund Freud to Martha Stewart.

Let’s say there’s someone who really loves animals, someone who genuinely cares for animals and would find it a privilege to be able to own a pet. But due to some reason is unable to fulfill this wish of theirs. Financial constraints, lack of space, unavailability of time to devote to them or incompatibility with the other members of the household. Sometimes, one’s profession is such, that it demands constant travel. This translates to inability to take proper care of the pet. In cases like these, there is a need for establishments that cater to such people. A place where one can go and live the life they have always dreamed of.

The concept of petting zoos first came into the picture when the London zoo started a children’s zoo with domesticated animals and trained wild animals, which they could play with, touch, pet and even feed. With time this idea grew and spread to other cities around the world. There are places that are still reluctant to accept the idea of opening up their zoos for human contact. The apprehension could be due to the investment that it requires in terms of capital and staff. While at the same time, some might say that there’s a certain risk factor involved for people and animals alike. One cannot expect every person to be genuinely caring towards the animals. Certain people including children find it amusing to try and harm or pester the poor creatures. Similarly, some time an animal might be particularly unpredictable.

But zoos, where this experiment has been successful, vouch for the increased acceptance and popularity of animals as an integral part of one’s well being, compared to where one could only view them from beyond safety enclosures. It is also an effective source of revenue generation as well as increased employment opportunities amongst professionals trained in handling animals. The importance of affinity towards animals was propagated through such an experience. Awareness towards how they should be treated was also generated. Hands on experiences are useful in making professions to do with animals, an evidently viable career option too. It also helped to change the thought amongst people that one must stay away from animals. One needs to be careful but not scared of them. As a result people got an opportunity to experience bonds with animals. One could explore the love that any animal feels for someone who treats it right, whether they are pet, domestic or even wild, in most cases.

The animals that are usually considered for petting zoos are well trained. Domestic animals such as cows and goats are often used. Some wild animals that are harmless are also present. Alpacas, llamas, monkeys, pythons and even kangaroos are often found to be some of the popular choices. Guinea pigs, turtles, birds, miniature donkeys, rabbits and ponies are especially loved by young children. The zoos provide the patrons with relevant food, to ensure the health and well being of the animals is not compromised, and at the same time it is convenient for them. Food often fed to them includes hay, grass or crackers based on the animal in question. This is an exception to the general rule of not feeding zoo animals.

Animal lovers will tell you that the mere petting of an animal can successfully help you release the stress and tension of regular day-to-day life. Even watching them go about their business at leisure soothes the nerves. A genuinely happy animal can transmit similar feelings into those around it. Their lovable and adorable nature makes one feel special in an instant. Scientific studies have proven the benefits of constant interaction and contact with animals. Kids benefit especially from pet animals, and since one may not be able to own one, having a place where they can experience the joys of being a pet owner, even for a short time, can help make the child less aggressive, sharper and a better human being.

While there are innumerable benefits of contact with animals, one needs to be aware if they are allergic to any particular animal. Some people might be prone to allergic reactions to animals such as cats, or animal hair. If so, one must avoid any contact with them, at the risk of fatalities. Apart from that, there is also the risk of transmitting diseases to and from the animals. Hence, it is critical to properly cleanse yourselves before and after coming in contact with them.

Along the lines of petting zoos, cat cafes are now popular in some eastern countries especially Japan. These cafes allow people to interact with cats exclusively at nominal charges. The physiological and psychological benefits of petting cats are well documented, especially among the elderly. The purring sound that they emanate while being petted is deemed to be comforting for most people. Their unassuming, no-fuss temperament is highly appreciated by cat lovers. There is an increasing need of establishments along such lines considering the kind of lifestyle that is becoming common lately. A place where one can rejuvenate among silent, loving, non-judgmental creatures that help you relax without asking for anything in return.

What do the following have in common- Full House, Air Bud, Famous Five, Homeward Bound and Up? They all had a golden retriever as the dog in them. Who doesn’t laugh at every cute antic of Doug, from Up? Or is awed by the faithful adorable companionship when The Five solve mysteries? That is the power that a golden retriever is blessed with. Its very appearance is appealing to one and all, from the youngest to the oldest. These large sized bundles of joy can credit their allure to their thick glossy coats and the charm that they exude every time they come bounding up to you. Their strong built is rarely a deterrent to its appreciation.

Originally trained to be gundogs, this breed gets their name from the occupation of retrieving hunted prey undamaged that formed a part of their job description. The breed originates from Scotland and has an instinctive love for water. One can often see them running and playing with their owners on beaches. But at the same time, they have the tendency to roam, which means that although they require diligent outdoor exercise (2 or more hours per day), and are well suited for suburban or country environments, one needs to be extra careful to keep them fenced in. Ranging from 21-24 inches in height and 27-34kg in weight, this breed is available in various shades of gold or cream. They are endowed with 2 coats of dense long straight or moderately wavy hair. The inner coat keeps them warm in winters and cool in summers, while the outer coat lies flat against their body and protects them from water.

Its intelligence makes it easy to train and versatile. It can be trained as a guide dog, a hunting dog or even an active member of search and rescue teams because of their talent to sniff out and detect unusual smells. The dog’s cordial and friendly temperament makes it an extremely popular family dog, but the same gentle behavior makes it unsuitable as a professional guard dog. They are not picky when it comes to eating habits and is also playful in nature, which makes it a favorite among the young children. Their loyalty and caring temperament is an added bonus especially as guide dogs.

There are 3 basic varieties in Golden Retrievers based on their size and weight. The British are heavier and stockier in built. The American Golden Retriever is lankier and taller than its British counterparts, but retains the thick coat. The Canadian variety has a thinner and is the tallest amongst all. The Canadians have darker colored coats compared to the other two. In general, the golden retriever’s outer coat sheds in small amounts throughout the year, while the inner coat is soft and helps it to adapt according to the weather. Their coat should not be kept too long, as that could lead to frequent tripping while playing or retrieving game.

29 may 1(1)

Golden Retrievers are the most common breeds in conformation shows. They are scrutinized mainly on their coat color as only certain shades are deemed acceptable at such events. Colors like white, red and black are considered unacceptable. Rich, lustrous golden of various shades or even cream are considered among the ideal coats for a golden retriever. With age the coat tends to lose its luster and fades in color. One might even spot white patches. The coat of the puppies is also lighter than its adult color, although there is not a drastic difference. The color of the nose is also a factor of judgment for Golden Retrievers at dog shows. These events gain formidable audience when it is time for the breed to display their talents. Fetching, running through hoops, jumping over hurdles are just some of the contests. This is fueled by their agile, competitive nature.

This breed has an average lifespan of ten to twelve years. Their kind confident and friendly nature makes them equally amiable towards familiar and non-familiar people and animals alike. They are extremely gentle and trusting, so any form of aggressiveness is unacceptable in dog shows, but at the same time they are not supposed to be feeble, timid or nervous. They are exceptionally calm with a constant eagerness to please others, which makes them susceptible to being overworked if proper care is not taken. They are biddable, eager to learn and have the ability to focus and sit quietly for hours. They have the ability to scramble in and out of boats with unusual ease.

The breed loves to eat. Obesity, kidney failure, hip dyslexia, cataracts and other eye diseases, cancer and other genetic diseases are common in them. Before buying one must know the pedigree. Allergies, skin diseases and excessive shedding are some of the common problems seen in the breed. Regular grooming can reduce shedding and prevent bald patches. One must also make sure to keep them active all year round. A healthy, happy dog has a significantly reduced tendency to most diseases, although in some cases they may be unavoidable due to age and genetics, but a healthy, happy Golden Retriever will surely succeed in keeping you healthy and happy.
