We have gone through quite a few myths about dogs. So now I have brought to you more myths. But this time, its regarding our feline friends. Read on and find out if what you have been thinking about your cat is a fact or just another misconception.
Cat myths
1. If a black cat crosses your path, it is considered to be bad luck

images (1)
This has got to be the most famous myth about cats. It originated centuries ago when black cats were associated with black magic and witchcraft. However, in the modern times we have to understand that the poor little creature does not choose it colour. A black cat is just like any other cat and there is absolutely nothing supernatural about it.

2. Cats hate water
Disliking water is not a characteristic of cats. Just like us humans, different cats have different likes and dislikes. Some cats detest water while some others find it intriguing to play with running water from the tap or the shower or even water fountains.

3. Cats always land on their feet

images (2)
Cats have got fast reflexes and they are good at balancing themselves. So usually when they fall from a height they need the time to adjust themselves to fall feet first. This is not possible is they fall from a very small height. But if they fall from a great height they can sustain internal or external injuries and also broken bones, teeth and palates.

4. Cats scratch objects to sharpen their claws
Generally cats scratch due to two reasons. Firstly they scratch objects near their territory to mark them visually and by scent so that other cats will know another cat had been there. Secondly, they might scratch to remove loose fragments of nail sheath.

5. Cats smother sleeping babies

4103103448_982ca1cc4c_z
It is not the intention of cats to kill babies and they never smother them on purpose. Cats love warmth and so they want to cuddle with babies. But sometimes since cats are huger than little babies, they might happen to harm them. That is why it is advisable not to leave both unattended.

6. Cats are independent and do not need attention
Some cats may be aloof but many others are very loving. If you are a busy person and cannot devote much time to your cat then it is better if you do not have any pets. Or you must at least have another person or cat to keep the first cat company while you are not around. Otherwise, it might suffer from depression.

7. Cats are lazy and they sleep all the time
A minimum of 14 hours of sleep is needed for cats. This helps them to maintain good health and keep their body in good balance. If they cannot sleep for a long time then they might face health problems and become irritated, increasingly sensitive and aggressive in behaviour. It will also affect their capacity to learn.

8. Indoor cats cannot get diseases or fleas
Diseases and fleas can also be passed on to indoor cats by different things they come in contact with. Fleas and ticks can inter the house via the owner’s shoes or clothing. Diseases can be passed on to indoor cats through the organisms that are carried by the air. Therefore it is important to take care and also to get them vaccinated regularly.

9. Pregnant women must avoid cats

images
Pregnant women can take care of their cats without having to worry about contracting toxoplasmosis. It is the litter box of the cats that they must stay away from as toxoplasmosis (a disease of cats that can harm unborm babies) spreads through faeces and litter.

10. Cats cannot be trained
While the same training methods that are used for dogs cannot be used for cats, it is true that felines can be trained. Cats are independent and less social than dogs. So they may not be very easy to train. However, it is not an impossible task.

11. Cats are nocturnal
Most cats are crepuscular, not nocturnal. Crepuscular species that are active primarily during twilight. Cats are most active during dawn or dusk because in the wild, even their prey is active at those times. But due to this they must not be left outside during the nights as in the present times it might prove to be dangerous for them.

12. Declawing is like trimming nails
It is absolutely not so. Declawing is not just the removing of claws but also the surgical amputation of the first joint of each toe of the cat. It is extremely painful and inhumane to the little animal. Since cats walk on their toes, it becomes very painful for them to walk after being declawed. Some cats may not fully recover from this and will develop behavioural problems. Hence, instead of getting them declawed, it is better to trim their claws a little or use Soft Paws.

It is important for us to stop relying on such myths and many more as in many cases, it will affect our treatment towards our pets. Sometimes, it might even be bad for their health. So we must always take care when it comes to myths and facts about our pets.

Cats have always been given a bad reputation through no fault of their own. Though they are aloof creatures and are the polar opposite of dogs but that doesn’t make them bad or evil, just different. Throughout the ages cats have been seen as a symbol of evil or necromancy. They have been associated with witches and the devil. Though white or brown cats are still appreciated in some parts of the world black cats are always frowned upon.  To find the answer as to why black cats are thoroughly hated we must go back in time to where all the myths and rumours started.

There are many legends regarding black cats, some good some bad and these myths differ from country to country. Here are some stories that you should know about. In Britain black cats are believed to bring good fortune and they were also given to new brides as a symbol of good luck. In Japan it is believed that a woman who has a pet black cat will have many people wooing her. In the Celtic mythology it is believed that a fairy known as the cat sith takes the form of a black cat. The Scottish though that the appearance of a black cat was a symbol of prosperity.

In other cultures like in the west cats were seen as a bad omen and were believed to be associated with witches and dark magic. They also consider it unlucky if a cat crosses your path. What is more ridiculous is that it is believed that if you are going to the casino and a black cat crosses your path you should turn around and leave and not go forward and enter the casino because it is sure to bring bad luck to the gambler. Germans believed that if a black cat crosses your path from left to right then it is fortunate but if it crosses from right to left then is unlucky.

During the Middle Ages or dark ages this superstition led to the death of many cats because people associated them with witches and they were burnt in bonfires. This led to the overpopulation of rats and other rodents which ultimately lead to the bubonic plague. This was prevalent in Europe but never in England.

Not all myths associated with the black cat were bad some were also good. Cats were held in high regard by the Egyptians and were prayed to because of the Egyptian goddess Bast. It was believed that by keeping black cats at home people could earn favours from the goddess.

Charles I treasured his black cat and considered it to be lucky. Upon the death of his cat he thought all his good luck was gone and sure enough he was arrested the very next day for treason. Pirates have a whole different set of myths regarding black cats. According to them if a black cat comes towards you, you are sure to have some bad luck whereas if a cat walks away from you, you will have some good luck. They also believed that if a cat gets on a ship and then leaves it that ship is bound is sink on its next voyage.

The myth which says that witches turn into black cats at night has its roots in a tale that dates back to the 16th century. A father and a son were travelling late one night on a moonless night. They saw a black cat crossing their path and pelted it with stones until the cat ran into a woman’s home who was then suspected of being a witch. The next morning the duo saw the woman whose house the cat had entered, limping and bruised and thus the myth began. During Halloween most animal shelters don’t let people adopt  black cats due to fear that they may be tortured and killed by superstitious people who still consider them unlucky. Throughout the world different cultures have different folklores regarding the black cat. Some say good things about it while others associate with death and misfortune. For example an Irish superstition says that if a cat crosses your path by moonlight it means that your death will happen in an epidemic whereas an English proverb says “whenever the house of the cat is black, the lasses of lovers will have no lack”.

The cat is a very wonderful and playful creature and if properly trained they can also play fetch like dogs. The black cat can’t help it if it is born with a black coat. It is no different than our regular white or brown cats. What is more unfortunate is that due to these absurd myths black cats are adopted less compared to cats of other colours. It is really sad that due to the beliefs of some superstitious people centuries back, the black cats are paying a price till today. Not only black cats but in general cats aren’t kept as pets in many households. Because of their agility, stealth and independence they are looked down upon. Cats are low maintenance pets and they know when their owner needs them and when their presence is not required. They do not keep doting on their owners like dogs do that does not make them indifferent creatures just different. Dogs and cats are a totally different species and this must be kept in mind. Neither can become like the other. Cats are unique in their own way and make wonderful pets to people who love them and take care of them properly.
