Most people think that if they allow their dog on the furniture and let it eat people food they then are encouraging their dog to be spoiled but if that is the criteria for spoiling a dog then I say that every dog should be spoilt. Barking, chewing, digging, jumping, house soiling, biting and other destructive behaviour are the traits of a spoilt dog. Spoiling occurs when you give something for nothing. Your dog must realize that just because it asks for something doesn’t mean he/she is going to get it. They have behave in a desirable manner in order to get their wishes; demanding and throwing a fit won’t work. Spoiling occurs when you reward your dog for those things which are not appropriate. You might think it is funny now but in the long run you will come to regret it.

The best human and dog relationship is when the human is the trainer and the dog is the trainee. Your dog must know that you are the alpha of the pack. Your dog must realize that he can earn the good stuff by doing things to please you. Though dogs love their owners but they are hardly ever trying to please them. They do things which guarantee them a treat and in the process if they please their owner it is only accidental. A spoiled dog is one who does not need to please to the human to get the good stuff and generally behaves like the trainer in most cases. A spoilt dog has many traits but mostly a spoilt dog is one who barks at three in the night to go out, barks at your husband when he tries to get on his side of bed or whines to be let outside the crate so that he can sleep on the bed and in most cases drags his poor owner around the neighbourhood eating every bit of garbage, barking on every human and animal on the way and peeing on every bush.

Your dog must realize that nothing is free in this world. He/she has to perform a desirable task so as to get a treat. Your dog has to learn to say please. The best way for dogs to say that is to sit and wait patiently while you serve his food or tell him to do something and this is the easiest of commands. Once your dog knows that doing this will earn him rewards he will do it without fail. Never command your dog to ‘say please’ he has to learn to do it by himself. If they don’t do it on their own accord then they will not do it in front of your neighbours and guests. Your dog has to realize the fact that unless they initiate the good behaviour the good stuff won’t happen.

Don’t falter or give way to your dog’s tantrums. If your dog wants to go for a walk and then starts running about here and there and doesn’t listen to you then say ‘no’ and keep the leash back in the drawer. After your dog has calmed down try again if he/she behaves in the same way then say ‘no’ again and keep the leash back. Do this repeatedly until your dog realizes the fact that throwing a fit will get him nowhere. Once your dog sits quietly and waits to be collared then take him out for a walk as a reward.

If your dog is already spoilt then the only way to modify his behaviour is by reprogramming all that he has learnt. For example your dog has the habit of barking to let you know that he wants to go out and you want him to quietly come and sit near you instead of barking. The only way to do this is to stop responding; stop responding when your dog barks the next time. He will probably start barking louder but pay no heed. If you give in and open the door then your dog will realize the fact that barking louder makes you open the door and this will not end well for you. It might take some days or some weeks but your dog has to realize the fact that unless he comes and quietly sits by your feet he won’t be permitted to go out. Make sure you don’t tell your dog to keep quiet once he starts barking or else he will think that it is a chain reaction. He might think that if he barks and then keeps quiet then he will be permitted to go out and that is not something you want to inculcate in your dog.

Make sure you understand your dog. Lack of understanding gives way for pushy behaviour. Reward your dog for the good things and not for the bad things. Don’t think of their pushy behaviour as funny or cute. Some dogs are already spoiled but there is no reason for alarm; with a little bit of patience and a no nonsense attitude your dog can become one of the most well behaved dogs around. Don’t accept the fact that since your dog is already spoilt there is nothing you can do about it but teach and train your dog well so that the next time someone says spoilt you can proudly say “not my dog”.

Here is the real truth about cats and dogs- they are just not as desirable as they used to be to a new generation of pet lovers. These days exotic is the new buzzword when it comes to having a pet- and from horses to guinea pigs, parakeets and white mice, Indians are increasingly choosing the more unusual option. And when they do opt for a cat or a dog, there is an unique request like a Brown Labrador or a Persian cat. Exotic is the new trend and people are hugely buying into it.
People are becoming more experimental about the kind of pets they want, especially small animals which they can easily keep in smaller places and flats. But even as animal breeders seek to introduce new varieties into the country, ultimately for most pet owners, there is only one reason to choose an animal, bird, fish or a more exotic creature and that’s the love, affection, companionship they receive from their pets.
You are in the market for a new pet, but cats are too insolent, dogs are too subservient and tropical fish can’t garner any envy from your neighbour. There is no need for despair, as there is a massive- and mostly legal exotic pet business that makes the rare, the freakish and the wildly expensive companions available for purchase.
There is a seperate allure of owing exotic pets. A Menagerie in the house, snakes wrapped around any kind of a post, rhesus monkeys leaping from counter to counch, lions sunning themselves on your gravel driveway, capuchins and bears and wolves hugging you and clambering over you; the experience or if an imagination in itself will be awesome. They are the most unusual animals kept in captivity and there can be a difficulty in meeting their needs. But this challenge is a must if you house exotic animals, under the law of Animal Welfare Act.
FENNEC FOX is a small desert fox, one of the most popular mammals because they thrive with the owner being more ‘easier’ to manage. Unlike other foxes they make good house pets. They are high maintenance animals but are harmless.
BENNET’S WALLABY are simply too small, unlike kangaroos. They come with no possible threat and should be kept in a sufficient pen with available shelter. They thrive in domestic settings after adolescence and are cool and calm to handle.
ep 2

SUGAR GLIDER are popular marsupials who weigh not more than five ounces. Their lively and curious nature help them bond with the humans. They are social and nocturnal and tend to seek attention. They need suitable environment and diet which sometimes become a matter of concern.
KINKAJOU are nocturnal rainforest mammals, friendly and affectionate and therefore can enjoy human companionship. They have sharp, carnivorous teeth, marshmallows and gummi bears. This preserves their wicked, bacteria loaded bite for when scared.

ep 1
BENGAL CATS have no relation to the Bengal Tiger but is a hybrid creation featuring pre-designed genetic characteristics that are cross-bred with the likes of something more exotic like an Asian Leopard cat. The result is a new feline breed that acts more like a mellow domestic but looks like he just walked off the Savannah plains. The more pure bred the cat, the more costly it is.ep 3
MUNTJAC DEER are kept by some as House Pets as they are unique to their larger counterparts. They reach the size of a large housecat, are extremely affectionate and thrive with proper human care. A deer indoors can sound a bit bizarre to your neighbour but they are excellent pets, apart from the owner’s dealing with the chewing habit of this species.
SPOTTED GENET are wild African exotic mammals, attractive due to their harmless intimidating look. They are higly energetic nocturnal and arboreal ‘cat-ferret’. They combine several good qualities of other animals as well as possessing some of their own, making a rewarding pet for the right owners. They are skittish, hate to e restrained by human’s; scratch marks can be expected. Every Gennet owner knows their animal’s behaviour well.
BOBCATS are great pets; a small exotic feline, correct for homes but the trouble is deciphering how the ‘right owner’ of these animals are. Bobcat owners must be willing to fully anticipate issues like spraying, aggression, the need for outdoor enclosures and other modifications to accomodate potentially destructive factors, whether they occupy or not.
CAPYBARA AND PANTAGONIAN CAVIES are the world’s largest rodent clocking in at 150+ pounds and their alone world could arouse interest from the non-exotic pet owner’s crowd. Pantagonians are small, terrestrial versions who just require some room to roam and obviously aren’t dangerous.
ep 5

The word ‘exotic’ can frighten many people but little do many people know that when they support exotic pet bans, they may be empowering bans for their own pets. The word ‘exotic’ was never synonymous to the words “large” and “dangerous” but this is what people associate them with. Animal Rights Groups are not ignorant to the word- they just keep quiet on their anti-position towards more common and less overtly threatening animals such as hedge dogs and other reptiles. Housing Exotic creatures can sound a little weird and can even invite objection from your neighbour, but you enter into a completely unique pet world which thus becomes an experience of a lifetime. No wonder, your attachment with them becomes exotic and memorable.

Being honest for a moment, we all think that our pets are the best pets in the world. We are quite positive about it and we might put an argument about it. So today I’m going to tell you about a dog who is not like that at all. He’s probably the worst dog in the world or the second of the worst dogs of the world, right after Marley. Remember Marley from the movie Marley and me?  One that made us cry! Roxanne is a little better than him.

black pug

Sorry, I forgot to introduce Roxanne- my 4yrs old Doberman. Normally dogs come to you and if they are hungry they will just look at u and lick their mouth and your feet and palms too. But Roxanne will come up, put his forth leg on your feet and tap you like we humans do if you still don’t look convinced to feed him he will start chewing your feet or palms. No it’s not his age of growing teeth he is just hungry and he will express it that way every time he is hungry.

I’m sure all of you, dog lovers have seen that real cute face that dogs make- with their ears dropped and widening those beady eyes? Yes, that is cute and you instantly fall for that look. But BEWARE!! Sometimes they do that when they are angry or nervous. How would you know if that expresses anger or nervousness? Here is a tip. Look if he is wagging his tail with that look. If it is then its not a reason to be worried about! But if it’s not, then you should try staying away from it. Believe me, I had misjudged his looks and had to pay for that.

Dogs can be in a bad mood. You admit that right? No matter how much they love you. I think they have grown the mood swing thing from us and they are getting good at it every day. If you are late in feeding them they start playing the mister-angry-bad-guy. They become touchy when you try to talk to them or try to play them.

There is another kind of dog, the Roxanne kind. They eat you up if you don’t feed them, no bad mood, nothing. Sometimes, it actually becomes hard to read what is going on in those not-so-well-developed yet hyperactive brains. None needs to be dogs can never be evil. They love their masters unconditionally no matter how much of a headache he is to you. You know that. All of us know that. He just needs to be taken care of and understood a bit, that’s it! And it will try to give all it has to keep you happy!

Did you know that a dog can learn over 200 words? Recently an article in a leading magazine by Juliane Kaminski has stated that Rico, a Border collie could learn over 200 words and could understand short phrases.

More fun facts:

  1. By becoming a member of our family they actually include the humans in their packs. Dogs are the descendants of the wolves. They used to live in a pack and when they came in contact with humans they generalised their social behaviour. So do not even think for a moment that you have compromised some of your family’s space by bringing a dog. It is actually them who have compromised and still compromising.
  2. Have you noticed that guilty face they make? I bet you have. Because every dog does it. You may think it’s because they know that you are displeased with something your dog has done. You would be wrong. Believe it or not when you are displeased with your dog, may be a little but you show some negative body languages. Your dog gets that and in order to avoid your anger he makes that face. Dogs have no sense of guilt. I know it is hard to believe but it is true.
  3. Sometimes the dogs don’t come to you when you call them. Okay. Let’s face it, most of the time your dog doesn’t come to you when you call him. Do you know why? it’s either because he doesn’t get what you are trying to say or he doesn’t have enough motivation to come. If every time he came you had given him a treat then it could be enough motivating for him. Not only treats, if you took him to the park when he responded that could be motivating too.
  4. Dogs are attention seekers! Well… some of them are. Have you ever wondered why he barks or steals food or clothes when you are not giving them any attention? They just want your attention. When you are not giving him attention he might perform all the trainings you have given to him but still if you don’t acknowledge him, he would start barking or stealing a cloth or pulling your cloth. They don’t really care about good or bad attention. He is just happy when he is being acknowledged!

A happy wife is a myth, a happy dog is not. Dogs are basically happy creatures but when he is not he is probably having trouble in getting your attention or trouble in getting food or trouble in his health. So when he is not happy you should be worried.

I will write more about Roxanne and other good dogs on my next article. Stay on the site.

P.S: all dogs are unique in their own way.
