Ah! So now you are looking for ape friend that seemed to be a pretty smart buddy in that latest Hollywood flicks you saw recently. You must be wondering if you could own one and keep yourself occupied with your new found friend. Well, take it slow buddy, because it isn’t as easy as it looks like on the screen. No I am not saying it would turn out to be another ‘The-Rise-of-The-Planet-Of-The-Apes’, but you would surely have  a tough time handling your monkey friends. Here is why.

Disciplinary Issues

disciplime

While you may find baby monkeys and Chimpanzees irresistibly cute but as they grow up, the reality would soon strike upon you in the form of disciplinary issues associated with them. Look! They are not same as a dog or cat, which would wag its tail around you and listen to your orders. They are wild and certainly not the ones who would respond when you throw the stick. As kids, the apes learn all the monkey etiquette via social interactions by observing their elders and imitating them. This way of learning is obstructed when they live in human filled environment and tend to behave differently, which can be abnormal. As babies they can be easy to handle but as they grow up they can prove to be an uncontrollable liability that would chatter and roam around in your house defying your sense of peace and safety. It is difficult to teach an ape human behavior and etiquette and it obviously not preferable and expected.

Wild, Real Wild!

wild

They are not domestic beings. Though they are vegetarians but they have got canines that can prove to be dangerous if not fatal. There have been many cases where a poor owner lost a finger or two as his pet lost his temper. By the time they are adults, that is around five years of age, they become quite stronger than humans. In any case if they become aggressive then even the most experienced care taker cannot help but watch the mess come into existence despite all the efforts. Apes, though can be handled to some extent when they are young but as puberty hits, they long for others of their kind and become ecstatic.

Space and Time

home

Apes, with chimps specially stay with their moms for more than five years. Even while sleeping, the mamma chimps keep in contact with their infants while sleeping. They are raised with affection and care which a human cannot relate to or imitate. Even devoting all the affection and care, owners often overlook the everyday needs of constant cleaning, developing new tricks to keep them occupied, feeding regularly etc. Petting a chimp is not only concerned with keeping a hold on basic needs, ample space and dedicated time devotion are a part of it. No matter how big your bungalow is, or if you have a huge backyard, for a grown up apes, it would never be enough. Apes like to roam around and explore new spaces, that way your whole house can turn into a mess. It is how you imagine a 3 year old powerful kid roaming across your house, pulling down curtains and moving tables and furniture.

Chimps can become irritated if neglected. You may be off your schedule or come late sometime only to find your pet friend really angry upon you, that may take the shape of a havoc. Oh and if you think you can take your pet on a trip with you then forget that, you won’t even find a proper caretaker when you are away all by yourself.

Communicable diseases

disease

Of course we are not much different from them, they being our ancestors. What could be more dangerous than getting infected by a disease they carry, which can b easily transferable living with your pet. Any disease that harms them can affect us too, since we are so similar genetically. So either way, a disease can be bad for both you and your ape friend equally, no matter who is the transmitter.

Time to say goodbye

hug

Finally after going through all the headache and back breaking struggles , you would realize that these big monkeys only belong to the forest, where they can be happy and stay healthy. It can come to you that no matter how much compassion and care you show towards your pet and all the time you devoted for it, all of it turned out to be a treachery. Well, then let it be clear, like you can’t stay in a jungle with a chimp family, climbing trees and eating fruits, similarly an ape cannot be tamed to be a domestic amuse. Though you might have bonded with the ape but you realize have to let go, well deep down you actually knew this day would come.

The Disturbing Truth

Monkey

Many owners don’t know this but zoo keepers don’t accept apes that have grown under human influence as they don’t mingle up well with others of their kind. They cannot adopt to the character traits that are though small  but unique and equally important to stay alive among their own species. Thus as a misfit they are targeted by other apes and suppressed. Same is the reason why they can’t be let out in the wild, the conditions being tougher there, decreasing the survival chances.

One dark truth that follows is that, these chimps are sent to various laboratories for innumerable experiments that are conducted ruthlessly upon these creatures. The are subjected to pain and torture and kept in inhuman conditions. Though the owners are told not to visit their chimps and disturb them in their new and happy homes, they don’t come to know that their beloved friends actually become victims to various horrendous conditions they are kept in. Thus following this many countries and places have banned keeping apes as pets.

A pet is your animal companion and eventually becomes your family as you develop bonds with it. At one point this human-animal bond becomes so strong that it can turn your pet into your protector. There are hypothetical super-humans who risk their lives for your safety. Now let us have a look at super-pets who have pushed the limits of human-animal relationship and emerged as heroes with their extraordinary and unbelievable deeds to protect their owners and family.

Below are few instances where animals have proved themselves to be understanding, protective, heroic and above all a best friend.

  1. Protector Pedigree

6

This incident took place on a fine October day in 2007. Charlotte Svillicic, a 17 month old baby was playing in yard in her Australian home when suddenly their pet Doberman, Khan starting making growling noises. The reason behind his snarl was totally unexpected, as it turned out to be one of the most poisonous snakes of the world, king brown snake, under the house. The dog tried to nudge the baby away but when it realized no avail in doing so, it lifted the baby with the diaper and tossed her few feet behind him. This startled the snake and in the sudden act it struck back at Khan and bit him on the paw. The snake dashed away and the toddler was saved, but the dog was ended up in hospital. Though Khan was given antivenin and he soon recovered but this act of courage got him appraisal and made him ‘hero of the day’.

  1.  Parrot Alarm

3

Megan Howard, who was babysitting 2 year old Hannah Kuusk, heard her pet Quaker parrot screaming at the top of its voice and flapping its wings. Megan was in bathroom at that time and later said that she had never heard such shrill cries of her pet before. When she came out of the bathroom, she saw the toddler had chocked herself and her face had turned blue by then. Immediately Megan performed Heimlich maneuver over Hannah, a series of steps to save people from chocking. Although she saved the little girl but admitted that her pet had been the real life saver. The bird was later presented with the local Animal Lifesaver Award by Red Cross.

  1. Lulu to the Rescue

2

While on a vacation in Pennsylvania woods, Jo Ann Altsman suffered from a heart attack. Lulu, her potbellied pet pig realized that something went wrong with her owner and somehow managed to get out of their mobile home, towards the road. When a car would approach, the petit piggy would lie down in the middle of road to stop the passerby. The times car didn’t stop, Lulu would go back to her owner to check upon her and then run back to the road. This intelligent act of the pig made a motorcycle stop and follow the pig into the woods. There he found the lady and immediately called 911. Such an immediate and surprising act saved by Lulu, saved the owners life.

  1. A Meow saveS 3

4

Keesling family would have died in their sleep, had their cat not woken them up, by nudging and meowing loudly and continuously. A gas-powered water pump started leaking odorless carbon monoxide in the home. Nobody realized it except the cat, who tried her best to wake up her owners. Cathy’s husband and son were already unconscious, when Cathy got woken up by shrilling meows of her cat. Slightly feeling dizzy she called 911 and got help before it was too late.

  1. Magic Mare

1

Animal therapy has long been known for its health benefits. Animals are known to reduce blood pressure and even prevent heart attack.  In a similar incident where horse therapy proved to be a boon to a patient who hadn’t spoken to anyone for three long years in her assisted-living facility. Magic, a beautiful mare with blue eyes used to visit patients, who needed comfort. That included her trips to hospitals, care facilities and group homes. When that patient saw Magic for the first time, she uttered out her first few words after a long time and that were,” Isn’t she beautiful?” Those words made every one come to tears and the lady improved considerably up on her health. This one interaction got Magic AARP’s Most Heroic Pet 2010 award.

  1. Taking a bullet

5

In this heroic act by Lefty, this brave dog dared to cross all bounds when she leaped in front of one of the robbers, who pointed the gun at one of the family members. This incident happened during one night when the family home was broken in by four robbers. The dog took the bullet all by her and ended up getting injured on her leg and her shoulder. She was immediately taken to the nearby veterinary hospital but unfortunately had to lose one of her limbs. The cost of surgery was too much so in order to raise money for her treatment, they shared her story on Facebook. Not only were they able to get enough funds but the family pet became a heroic pup overnight.

  1. Fire Fighter

KTNABuddyandBen

Buddy, a brave German shepherd, received a silver-plated bowl from Alaska State Troopers for his heroic act when he saved his owners home from fire. When Ben Heinrich’s workshop caught fire in 2010, he shouted to his pet for help. Buddy made a dash to the road nearby and led a state trooper to the fire site. With the in-time help and Buddy’s bravery, Ben’s house was saved from flares.

These are just a few stories of bravery and selfless acts of pets towards their owners. These super animals have saved lives in time, with their intelligent and heroic acts. They are not just your friends, they are caring and concerned for you as any family.

Friendly, loyal, sweet, intelligent, playful, exuberant, mouthy, mischievous, naive, curious, loving and protective are some of the adjectives we use to describe dogs. But then some dogs are labeled dangerous, ferocious, aggressive, savage, vicious and unpredictable. This thought has mainly developed based on the fact that some dog breeds have a history of being violent with animals as well as people. Since big dogs create bigger wounds they’re reported more frequently and this causes the medical data to be skewed inaccurately toward big dogs. Truthfully, all breeds can be provoked to bite. Whether or not a dog actually bites is generally a result of how well it’s been trained and treated. Nevertheless, it can’t be helped that some dog breeds have more potential to cause serious harm to a person if the dog were to decide to attack. But why would a dog, man’s best friend, decide to attack? Here are some of the most common reasons:

1)      The dog is protecting or thinking that it is protecting its owner.

2)      The dog is protecting its owner’s property.

3)      The dog is protecting its puppies.

4)      The dog is guarding its food.

5)      The dog is provoked by the actions of the victim like pulling its tail, hurting it by mistake etc.

6)      The dog is not properly trained and does not interact well with strangers.

7)      The dog is having a bad day, is irritable and its tolerance level has fallen.

8)      The dog’s sixth sense tells it that the person/ animal has bad intentions.

9)      The dog is in pain, injured or sick.

10)   The dog is involved in rough play with the victim and gets overly excited.

11)   The dog does not know how to bite and does so by mistake.

dangerous2

Dogs are intelligent creatures and do not like to assault without reason or warning.  A dog bite rarely happens without warning, so chances are these warnings are being misunderstood or ignored. The best way to avoid such a situation is to learn a dog’s language and respect its boundaries. A dog could be humungous in size or have very large teeth but could be very docile while a small and petite dog could suddenly bite! A dog’s disposition should not be judged by its looks or its breed. Every dog is different. But like humans speak with their mouths, dogs express themselves with their body language. Some of the warning signs before a dog becomes fierce and aggressive are given below:

1)      Pleading eyes: The dog looks at you with a pleading expression.

2)      Physical Retreat: The dog takes a few steps back. One must not try to approach it.

3)      Head turn: The dog turns his head indicating that it does not want an altercation.

4)      Yawning: Dogs yawn when they are nervous and try to calm themselves down. Although a yawn is not always for this reason.

5)      Licking: Incessantly licking either you or itself could be a request to back off and give it space but you might also taste very good!

6)      Whale eyes: Seeing the whites of a dog’s eyes, also known as “whale eyes”, a fixated look and dilation of its pupils is a serious warning sign.

7)      Body Language:A hard stare, ears back, head lowered, fur standing and most of its body weight on its front legs is a sign of an aggressive or threatened dog.

8)      Tail position: A wagging tail is not always a friendly sign.

9)      Growling & Snapping: Critical warning point i.e. just before the attack.

10)  Two or more signs together: If any of the above signs are combined, most probably the attack is imminent.

dangerous3

I am a proud owner of a Doberman pinscher a.k.a. Doberman. She is about 11-12 months old but is quite big in size already. She is the friendliest dog I have ever petted. She does not bark at strangers unless she senses that they are a threat to me. She only barks in defense and so far she has never growled or snarled. But still sometimes, she shows one or more of the warning signs above while we are just playing or running around. Since she is still a pup and is in her training period, I say ‘No!’ whenever she gets aggressive. My training and my upbringing will design her temperament. Same goes for all the other dogs and their owners. Some of the other dog breeds, including Dobermans, that are considered more aggressive and dangerous than the others are:

Dangerous-Dog-Breeds

2)    Rottweiler

3)    Pit bull

4)      German Shepherd

5)      Boxer

6)      Presa Canario

7)      Dalmatian

8)      Giant Schnauzer

9)      Bull Terrier

10)   Alaskan Malamutes

dangerous4

One must know that no dog is minacious without some kind of provocation. The reason for an attack could have just been perceived by the dog rather than an actual reason. That is why the owners as well as other people should be wary of the signs a dog displays. One must know how to read a dog’s body language. Dogs are one of the best creations of nature. They are cute and faithful. No dog should ever be punished. Pain should not be inflicted on any dog to train it or teach him a lesson. Dogs are creatures full of love and no lesson can be taught better, than with love. Happy petting!

Have you ever thought what it would be like to own a lion as a pet. Well then, this is your chance. But there is a catch. This pet will be a miniature version of a lion. It only has an unmistakable similarity in appearance, but it really is a dog. Not just a dog, but one of the cutest dogs you must have ever set your sights on. This breed is absolutely adorable in not half as ferocious as a real lion, which is just another point of attraction. Those cute eyes look like buttons in the middle of that face that resembles the face of a lion, complete with a mane. In fact the Chow Chow  originated in Northern China, where it was known as Songshi Quan, which translates to puffy-lion dog.

Chow Chows are also called Chows. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world believed to be used as a model for the Foo dog. The Foo dog is the traditional stone guardians found in front of most Buddhist temples and palaces. They are said to be descendants of wolves. They were first found in the high steppe regions of Siberia or Mongolia and went on to be used in China, Mongolia and Tibet. Evidence points to existence of dogs that looked like Chow Chows as far back in time as 150BC. They were essential companions to the Mongolian armies in their various invasions in China, Europe and even the Middle East.

images

Their original purpose was herding, hunting, pulling and guarding. They were then used as general-purpose working dogs with the demise of the aforesaid activities with time. They were also bred for human consumption. Not only that, they were also used as sled dogs and war dogs, because of their ability to pull heavy loads and their large size.  It has been said that breeds like Pomeranians and elkhounds have descended from Chow chows. Interestingly enough, it is believed that Queen Victoria’s pet Chow inspired the creation of the first teddy bears, due to their cute and cuddly appearance. She was so in love with her chow that she would carry it everywhere with her, which apparently went against the royal of code of conduct, which lead to the idea of a teddy bear that looked similar to the pet.

The Chow has a characteristic blue black tongue and a unique shaggy lion-like appearance of their face. This sturdily built dog has a square profile. Their short triangular ears with rounded tips perfectly compliment their lovable appearance. As a consequence of their origin being from the coldest parts of the world, they have a very dense double coat that is rough or smooth, which looks mane-like as it is particularly thicker in the neck region. Chows exist in colors such as red, black, fawn, cinnamon, cream or even blue, although not all of them are acceptable color schemes among show dogs, nor are they all available in all countries. Their deep set, almond shaped eyes have the capacity to make you melt. Their tail too is distinctly curly and thick. Their hind legs tend to be unusually straight that gives them a stilted appearance.

images (2)

They are fiercely protective of their owners and their property, and are usually discerning of strangers. They might be unusually aggressive or even extremely timid, which gives them cat-like attributes. They are fairly passive in their temperament and so can be conveniently kept as house pets, as they don’t tend to be too active. But at the same time, one must make sure, that the chow gets sufficient physical exercise to avoid lethargy and boredom. It has direct consequences on its health and restlessness. Once a routine is set that involves Daily exercises, the chow will look forward to it, as that could be the only source of activity for it. Ideally they weigh between 45 to 70 pounds and grow to a height of about 17 to 20 inches. Fleas, cancer, glaucoma and hip dysplasia are some of the most common ailments in chows.

They can be extremely stubborn in nature, and can develop attachment to certain things as they grow. It is extremely loyal towards the family members. They are usually calm and well behaved, but they are also not particular fans of training, which is crucial especially in their early years to teach them to value those who love them. In order to avoid aggressiveness and the over protective behavior, it is advisable to expose them to other animals and people as a means of increased social interaction. But some dogs can be easy going enough to seem aloof towards everyone except their owners. They are considered as one of the most high risk dogs, hence, it is better to keep them leashed to avoid unnecessary tussles with cats or small dogs or even strangers, but with training this too can be avoided.

Chows continue to be extremely popular pets among dog owners, mainly due to their cuteness factor. Apart from feeding, training and grooming chows are fairly low maintenance and yet are adored at dog shows. It is no wonder then that they are a favorite choice among several celebrities too from Walt Disney’s wife to Janet Jackson, and Sigmund Freud to Martha Stewart.

The warm welcome that a dog gives you when you reach home after a long tiring day is enough to forget half of your worries. Isn’t it? That antidepressant of yours just wants you to be at home by his side so that he doesn’t have to worry about you leaving him alone in the house.  So when you get back home and you are playing with him, he becomes the happiest dog in the world. You may like the way he jumps up to your chest to show that he missed you but your friends, relatives especially the kids may freak out about this behaviour of your dog.

Behavioural Problems AND THEIR SOLUTION

Jumping Up:

If the dog is large, you may put your knee between him and you or you can hold his paws firmly without hurting him until he struggles to let him go. When he is standing properly on the ground on his four legs bend down to his level and greet him back or pet him.

Barking:

Protecting your house is your dog’s natural instinct. Once he is in the house it is his territory to protect but sometimes in order to protect the house, he may bark uncontrollably. To solve this problem, ring the doorbell and let him bark for sometimes then distract him but never with food. You can tell him stop or make a loud noise. Now once he has stopped, give him treats. Do that for sometimes repeatedly. Ring the doorbell – let him bark – make a loud sound or tell him to stop – give him a treat when he has stopped. Now try doing it without the treat. Now delay in giving the treat but give it to him finally if he really stops barking. That way you can refrain him from barking without discouraging him to give you the necessary warning.

Chewing Habit:

This is a normal habit for puppies when their teeth are growing. In this period he can chew on anything he gets. First of all keep everything away that can make his little belly upset. Give him some toys to chew on. But if he chews on anything else than his toys tell him not to, if needed scold him. But once he grows up he should give up this habit. Engage him in some other activities like playing. Give him things to chew on and keep an eye on him if he chews anything other than his toys tell him ‘no’! But most importantly keep your house clean; keep the tempting things out of his reach.

Aggression:

This is the most serious issue about your dog if not taken care of when it first shows its signs. He can seriously injure people with that behavioural disorder. You should take care that he never gets away with a growling when his toy is taken from him. Scold him a bit and ignore him. If he still doesn’t learn his lesson, take professional help. Never take your chances with a dog that is showing aggression.

Aggressions towards visitors:

If your dog treats your visitors like burglars, locking him away may seem the easiest way but it’s inhuman too. Do you ever lock your children away when they don’t like one of your guests? In this way he will never learn to accept anyone. He shows aggression towards a visitor because he feels threatened when a stranger (to him) stares at him from above and comes towards him with a raised hand to pet him. So leash him and take him to the guest and tell the guest to ignore him completely at first, no eye contact either. Let the dog take his time to know him. If he shows any aggression pull the leash a bit without hurting him. The visitor should be at ease with the dog. He can offer him a little treat from a distance avoiding eye contact. Once the dog takes the treat and show some friendly reaction the guest can pet him a bit.

Aggression towards family members:

The dog makes one member of his family the ‘pack leader’. He may dislike the others. If that happens, his “pack leader” should no longer feed him or take him to walks. The others of the family should do that. If he shows aggression towards a particular member, the responsibility of feeding and walking the dog should be transferred to that one member. That way he will start liking everyone of the family.

Aggression towards other dogs:

While walking him you may pass some areas with other dogs; your otherwise peaceful dog may become over protective, jealous if the other dogs come near you. That’s how a fight can start. Make sure when you are walking him your body is between your dog and his enemy. Pull the leash and pass the area quickly. Praise your dog for not fighting. Talk to him constantly. Give him some treats.

Guarding food:

If the puppy shows aggression to any approaching hand towards his bowl, keep giving him food while he eats so that he can understand that you are giving him food and not taking it away. Feed him with your hands. This way he will understand. If an adult dog shows aggression about food, keep giving him treats.

Stealing food:

It’s a problem when your dog steals unattended food from kitchen or dining table. So here’s the remedy. Keep food in his reach and ask him not to touch that. Watch from a distance. If he steals the food catch him on action and scold him, ignore him for sometimes. If these don’t work keep some food in his reach and add mustard or chilli sauce in it. This way he will understand that stolen food don’t taste good and will stop stealing.

No matter how bad your dog is, you should never beat him. He should never be hurt physically. And never lock him away. No matter how big your dog has become he is still like a child. Locking him away scares him. It’s enough if you ignore him when he does something bad. But don’t ignore him for too long. don’t worry if he is a little bad, EVERY GOOD THING COMES WITH A PRICE!
