Adopt Shelter Pets

One of the most naive facts that are attached to adoption agencies for pets are regarded to be false in nature. Facts of which people are unaware of generally makes one assume that such agencies work for nothing as such. This in fact is FALSE. Agencies for Pet Adoption tend to work the hardest towards spreading awareness about pets in dire need of shelter and care from foster homes and pet lovers. Such pets generally await for two consequences in their respective conditions:

  1. SHELTER FROM PET LOVERS
  2. DEATH

This is the hard truth. People are so oblivious to the conditions that these pets are surviving in, it is unbelievable and so shocking. Living in a supposed “developing” world wherein all are considered to be AWARE and CARING FOR ALL, it is shocking how people still carry the burden of being unknown almost every day of their lives. Such people end up spreading such false perceptions about re homing of pets to others in a way that describes these shelters and facilitating centers as being a no less than a slaughter house. This not only leads to misconceptions being formed in the minds of people around us, it even ends up making one doubt the existence of such agencies who work day in and day out towards providing for nothing but noble rehabilitation centers for pets in need of them.

WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO PICK THEM UP AND GIVE THEM A HOME

WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO PICK THEM UP AND GIVE THEM A HOME

People end up becoming reluctant due to such misconceptions and thus there is an innate need to provide for the TRUTH in its totality and pure self. Truth be told: Such pets are more than keen to provide you with more love and affection despite the negative stereotypes that they carry with themselves. Being termed as “unwanted” is not what anyone would want to be feeling like, which is why we must do away with such immature and misrepresented facts AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Some MYTHS that are carried around about PET ADOPTION AGENCIES are as follows:

MYTH #1:

“AGENCIES WILL PROVIDE ME WITH AN UNKNOWN PET”

This is one of the primary concern of any “about to be” pet owner that seems to crop up when wanting to adopt a furry creature. This is completely false, a research study shows that when one tries to attain a pet from an agency/shelter: MORE information is provided for against the information provided for pets by a breeder or a pet store. No matter how authenticated your pet store might be, you would never double check such stores, but consider this very fact: why would one want to let you adopt a bad specimen of a creature which in this case is a pet, despite providing you with a valid contract and all the valid legal documents ? All decent pet shelters/agencies have the provision of being able to provide you with the necessary documents that you may require in order to satisfy yourself when adopting a pet.

Even more so, such shelters contain with themselves pets who have been disowned by their ex-families due to financial issues or health related problems and if the pet that you are looking for has already been staying at the shelter for a long while you might be able to get a better background story to the pet from their previous owners/ the volunteers who have been taking care of the pets. They could provide you with the behavioral tendencies of the pet and let you know about the relevant information of the particular pet you are thinking of adopting.

 MYTH#2:

“NO PURE BRED/NO STRAY DOG = NO PET ADOPTION”

What usually one thinks when they get to know that the dog they were considering to adopt two seconds ago, that they are “stray dogs” or “non-pure breeds” is that SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG WITH THEM which is why they are living in the shelter/agency now. UNTRUE. Only because they ran away from their “MALICIOUS” masters makes them “UNRULY”. Only because they were “SEIZED” by the police for roaming about in the residential area makes them “CONTAIN EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS” which are permanent, always. Only because they were “AGGRESSIVE” after being tortured by other dogs makes them “VICIOUS”. FALSE. FALSE. FALSE.

The only thing “wrong” with such animals is that they can’t find a home with loved ones to live in.

MYTH#3:

“SHELTER PETS ALWAYS HAVE A DISEASE”

This might not be completely false. But at the very same time, it is not something that cannot be taken care of. Most of the authenticated shelters/agencies provide the owners with a NO-CHARGE VET FACILITY option or already take care of such problematic pets and will not let you hamper your own health only because they are monsters. Because they are not. A kennel cough is not something one could die of. Vaccines for diseases like DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, par influenza) will always be provided for, even before the adoption takes place.

NOT ADOPTED

MYTH#4

“AGENCY PROVIDED PETS COME WITH BAGGAGE”

The only baggage one might face could be the amount of poop/urine that one might have to deal with – but wait, that happens when a baby comes in as well.

Trust me, when I say this, there are no differences between a pet provided for by a pet store or one adopted from an agency; if they are not pure breeds- so what? Research shows that pure breeds tend to carry more problems regarding their health than stray pets/mixed breeds. Their personalities do not differ- pure breeds might cause more trouble for you if not less in comparison to such pets. If you think they will die earlier- that’s wrong; they might live more than your Pomeranian’s and Labradors- provided you take care of them, the correct way. Treat them like pets, NORMAL PETS and get the love back that you provide them with, with an additional security aspect(with dogs).

adopt?

MYTH#5

“AGENCY WILL NOT PROVIDE ME WITH WHAT I WANT”

Emphasizing on the fact again- if you find an authenticated agency; you will find what you are looking for. Sites such as PETFINDER and PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS provide the option of searching up for the pet you are looking for at a very minimalistic price.

It may seem that the task of creating awareness over this issue is next to impossible- FALSE. FALSE. FALSE. It is possible, and agencies like PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS help provide you with the same.

When it comes to providing for an adoption agency and National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy provides you with the article regarding the very same, allowing you to understand that what you are paying for is nothing in comparison to what you might be paying at a pet store or to a breeder.

So go ahead, spread awareness- if we can adopt babies from around the world, then why not pets?

Let’s find these homeless, loving creatures a safe, healthy environment to nurture themselves in.

We all love our pets. And we try to do everything that we possibly can to ensure they lead a happy and comfortable existence no matter how short it may be. What we are able to provide is not only based on our pet’s requirements but also on the affordability. All pets deserve to be treated like royalty the standard for which is set by their respective owners. But there are certain lucky ones that live life truly king size. These belong to the rich and famous people of the world. One could even say that the kind of treatment that these pets receive is probably better than most humans do. Their standard of living is significantly higher than their relatively less blessed peers.

These dogs get their own houses to live in. and not just the typical doghouse. These fully fledged dog houses can come with fully functional temperature controlled swimming pools. Not just that, the houses too are temperature controlled with custom designed furniture to suit the dog’s size and needs complete with a television set. They have their own personal butlers and physical trainers at times available at their every beck and bark. Regular massages and luxury treatments keeps them healthy and happy. What’s more is that they travel too in incredible style. Air conditioned private jets in the company of their affluent owners and luxury yachts and cruise liners for overseas travels and for domestic nothing less than equally extravagant cars and planes are their preferred mode of transport.

Paris Hilton for example is particularly partial towards her Chihuahua. She has been seen carrying it around everywhere she goes in its own custom designed Louis Vuitton purse. Decked in branded sunglasses or clothes often coordinated with her own, she sure knows how to pamper her lovable pooch. This dog lives the high life. It gets to visit some of the most exotic places in the world, travelling in style and living in utmost comfort.  Hollywood celebrities live with their pets in eloquence. The food is fresh of the highest standards. They are also dressed in clothes custom made by designers like Dolce and Gabbana.

Some stars go to extreme lengths to keep their pets in close vicinity, living with just as many as comforts as they themselves do. A famous Bollywood actor was reported to buy an entire plot adjacent to his own home, exclusively for his pets. They would live, play and peacefully co-exist right next to the actor in question. They were provided with a 24 hour help who would be expected to take complete care in his absence. This proximity made sure that the actor could go and visit his beloved pets whenever he could and rejuvenate himself by playing with them when he felt it necessary.

Michael Jackson is another example of celebrities with a special bond with his pets. He was a step ahead of other celebrities. This is because he not only had typical animals like dogs, etc. as pets, but his favorite pet was a chimpanzee. He kept all his pets in his grand mansion equipped with its very own zoo and amusement park, he liked to call Neverland. He was one of the richest, most popular musicians of all time. With the resources at his disposal, he made sure this reflected in the kind of life his pets lived too. They would oftentimes accompany him in his private jet on his music tours all around the world. Their living arrangements were at par with his own in fully serviced suites.

There have been several instances across the world where a rich person has left all their inheritance and property to their pet’s well-being instead of their family members or friends. Their legal will clearly states that the millions of dollars in their name are now in the hands of their beloved pet. This is not restricted to dogs but cats too. After the pet’s death, the remaining inheritance is then utilized as donation to charities or further transferred to the pet’s off springs. Or it could be used in the upkeep of the residence. This not surprisingly does not bode well with the relatives of the person in question.

Sometimes burglars find it a good alternative to kidnap a rich person’s pet. This is because the net worth of the pet or the amount of money in the pet’s account is high enough to compensate for other materialistic gains. The pet is so dear to the owner, that they are willing to pay abnormally high amount of ransom money, just to get their beloved pet back. There are cases where the pet is much dearer to the owner than his own offspring. Many a movies have been made along these lines, where the kidnappers find it cumbersome to provide the pet with the same kind of lifestyle that it is comfortable with.

Some might call it a futile waste of money. Such affluent people should take the responsibility of not only providing their pets with such an extravagant lifestyle, but at the same time try to adopt stray, abandoned or sick animals as pets, those that genuinely need special care and attention. They must also invest in the setting up of establishments catering to care of animals.

“Saving one animal won’t change the world but it will change the world for that one animal” – Vicki Davis

If you have decided to keep a pet, congratulations it will be the best decision of your life. Whether you have decided to keep a dog, a cat, a guinea pig or a bird that depends on your choice and lifestyle. The next question which comes to your mind is where should you buy your pet from. I say why buy when you can adopt. You can find your future companion in a local shelter or in animal rescue centres. The animals there have been cruelly abandoned by their previous owners and have been thrown to the streets to fend for themselves. Since these animals were previously pets they can’t find food on their own and can’t survive alone in this big bad world so ultimately they die of hunger or are involved in road accidents. Even the animal shelters can’t take care of them forever and ultimately they are euthanized.

By adopting an animal we are giving it another chance in life and another chance to find love. The animal shelters have all kinds of animals; dogs, cats and birds and I am sure one of them out there would be a perfect pet for you. It will surely catch your eye and you will love it forever.

REASONS TO ADOPT

The first and foremost is that you save a life- now isn’t that a wonderful feeling knowing that you not only saved a life but you are also getting a lifelong friend and more love than you can deal with. Adopting a pet will definitely make you feel better about yourself.

The adoption charges are also very less compared to those of buying a pet and the animals in animal shelters are not only spayed but they are also vaccinated.

You can choose your pet according to your choice – an adult cat or a dog or a puppy or a kitten. You will have a lot of choices  and most of them will also be house trained.

Adopting a pet also solves the issue of overpopulation of pets.

It also brings down the amount of animals being euthanized each year and it is also a great lesson in compassion.

You won’t be supporting pet stores and puppy mills this way and you will be getting a pet anyway. It’s a win-win situation. Puppy mills are places where animals are over bred for profit and their living conditions are miserable. The animals in puppy mills suffer from all kinds of health problems and they spend their entire lives in cramped cages.

Money can’t buy happiness or love – this saying holds true in this situation. There are millions of animals, approximately 6 to 8 million, waiting to be adopted each year. By adopting a pet you will have saved atleast one life.

MISCONCEPTIONS REGARDING ADOPTION

I can get a free pet so why bother adopting

That’s true, however vaccinating, neutering and flea treatments are expensive procedures but if you adopt all these procedures are added in the adoption fee and it still is very affordable and cheap.

Shelters don’t have the kind of pet I want

Believe me that is a completely wrong notion. Animal shelter workers spend a lot of time with the animals and they can find the right dog or cat for you. You just have to tell them about your requirements but in pet stores the salesperson will sell you just about any aniaml so as to earn a profit.

I have no idea what kind of pet I will get

You can always ask about the pet to the animal shelter workers. They will be able to tell you everything you need to know about the pets for example its behaviour and health whereas the pet store owners will have no idea about the animal’s reaction to a new environment.

The thing that must be bugging you the most probably is the question as to why was the dog or cat left in the shelter or abandoned. The answer is simple- their owners were heartless and irresponsible people.  No animal deserves to be abandoned. But mostly owners abandon their pets because  they move to a place where pets are not allowed ,they don’t have the time to take care of their pet anymore, allergies or they can’t afford their pets anymore. Think about these factors beforehand when you decide to raise a pet.

THE SAD PLIGHT OF ABANDONED ANIMALS IN OUR COUNTRY

In a country as large as India, a large number of animals are abandoned each year but sadly the animal rescue centres aren’t as efficient as they are in other countries. Animal shelters are still very scarce in our country and adoption isn’t prevalent at all. People heartlessly abandon their pets in forests and in places far away from their homes so that their pets get lost and can’t find their way back home. Only people as pernicious as the devil himself can do such a thing. Abandoning an animal that has loved you and only you for its entire life is just plain horrible and this deed should be made a punishable offence. We should have more animal shelters and people must inculcate the habit of adopting instead of buying. Adopting a pet will be like giving it a new lease of life and nothing can even come close to the expression of love and gratitude it will give us. As someone once said “A house is not a home without a pet” so start adopting and stop buying pets.
