We have all heard of people having pets like dogs, cats or birds. Some are even attached to animals like cows, hens and horses. But then there are a few others who have a really different idea of the term ‘pet’. They tame creatures that do not really belong inside a home. Today I have brought to you a list of ten strangest pets. Let us have a look at them.
10 Peculiar Pets
1. Big Cats
‘Tigers are the dogs of Dubai’, is a joke that has been doing the rounds lately. This is very much true not only in the case of tigers but also with lions, cheetahs and other big cats. Although these are wild animals, a new trend has begun to tame them at home as pets. This is due to the notion that having an expensive wild animal as a pet is a sign of being very rich and brave. But no matter how such animals are trained, they cannot ignore their predator instincts. There have been many cases of well experienced animal trainers being mauled by these big cats, let alone the general public. It is not only a matter of danger to rear these animals as pets but also a case of animal rights abuse.
2. Monkeys
When they are small, monkeys may seem to be very cute and cuddly. That is when people want to adopt them thinking that they are human-like and caring for them will be easy. But it is not so. Monkeys are generally very messy and also possessive about the persons they bond with, and every monkey does not bond with more than just one or two people throughout its lifetime. It then demands constant attention from its ‘friend’ and may get aggressive and destructive if left alone. If not given enough attention, monkeys become unhealthy and suffer from psychological problems. They are also known to pass on various diseases to humans.
3. Snakes
Snakes are aesthetically of great value. Their beauty attracts many. Thus they are sought after as pets. Although many are scared of these reptiles, there are some breeds of snakes which are not at all dangerous. But they still do require special attention. Nevertheless, they make good pets since the pet breeds of snakes are quite docile and do not mind being handled, if tamed. However, some countries like India do not permit the people to have snakes as pets at home.
4. Crocodiles
The crocodile is said to hold the title of having the strongest and most dangerous bite in the animal kingdom. People generally buy crocodile because they look easy to handle when they are small. But as they grown, they tend to get very huge in size and will need a large amount of space. Not to forget how strong, aggressive and messy they are as adults. These reptiles cannot be tamed whatsoever and therefore pose a huge threat to their surroundings. But they are quick to learn things. For example, they soon learn the routine of their feeding and also cleaning. But this can prove harmful for the one who rears them if he even makes a slight change in the routine.
5. Pet rock
This may seem like the most ridiculous of all pets but it is one. The pet rock is nothing but a crazy idea of Dahl, an advertising executive from California. Soon it became a fad and millions of people purchased pet rocks, making Dahl a multi-millionaire in just six months. The basic idea is that a rock is most suitable as a pet since it does not need any special care for feeding, bathing, training etc. There are absolutely no expenses involved in taking care of a pet rock. Moreover, they will not misbehave or get sick or even die. They can be played with and spoken to just like any other pet. They have only positives and no negatives, making them the ideal pet of anybody and everybody.
6. Bears
Yet another strange animal to have as a pet is a bear. Smalls bears are extremely cute and cuddly, just like teddy bears. But as they mature, they grow to be much bigger and stronger than humans. They can be tamed but even a little of their anger can be fatal for the people around. They are usually very curious and active and also like to engage themselves in digging, foraging, exploring etc. However, when they are confined to an enclosure and are not given access to such activities, they tend to get bored and neurotic.
There are many more additions to the list since different people have different tastes and liking . But everybody’s interests cannot be satisfied. Most people buy such pets they cannot take care of and only realize that later. It is then that they end up abandoning them, which does not turn out to be very good for the animal that has bonded with humans and has not got much experience of living in the wild. This proves to be harmful for the poor animal which was not given the choice to go through all of this. Hence if somebody wants to raise a pet, he must only do so after keeping all the implications in mind. He must be true to his commitment and not give up the animal half way through. More so, he must only keeps pets the animals which are truly meant to be pets.
