Cats don’t want much from their owner apart from food. They can be easily toilet-trained. A simple tray of dirt and a few training sessions are enough. The small space of an apartment is nothing to worry about for cats. They fit in under any shelter they get. They require less maintenance than canines. They make good pets. And all the above qualities make a cat the second popular pet. The crown definitely goes to the dogs for being the number one pet… with some music!
In India The Most Popular Cat Breeds Are,
Rusty Spotted Cats:
These are the most popular pet cats in India. They fit fine in Indian climate as they are native Indian. These cats have grey fur with rusty spots all over their body leaving the underbelly white with large spots. Their tails are thick and half of the length of the body. The tails are darker in colour than the body.
Siamese Cats:
The Siamese cats are also popular. These cats have well balanced athletic body. The black colour on their face is triangular in shape and the long pricked ears compliment the ends of the facial triangle and they get black tails and black legs as if they are wearing shoes. These are attention seeking cats. They love to be the centre of attraction and cry a lot when they don’t get as much attention as they want.
Himalayan Cats:
The Himalayan cats are also called the Colour Point Persian. They are the breed with extremely long, fluffy fur. Though they seem Indian native by their names but they are not. They are just the result of cross-breed between Siamese (for the markings) and Persian (for the long coats and temperament). So behaviour wise they get the attention seeking Siamese-ness with the topping of nice temperament of Persian cats. But the markings on Himalayan cats can be of so many colours like, blue, brown, flame, chocolate, lilac, red and cream.
Bombay Cats:
Typical Indian name of a not-so-Indian cat. These cats are originated from Asia. The Bombay is a muscular yet agile cat with black coat. Their coat is short, shiny and tight to the body. They have copper or golden eyes.
Maine Coon Cats:
The oldest and the wisest of cat breeds are Maine Coon. The world’s oldest breed, they are found everywhere in the world and that signifies that they can withstand the cold and the warm weather. But they are not as popular in India as they are in Western countries. Their fun-loving and awesome personality makes them safe pets for the children.
Other 10 Most Popular Breeds Are,
The Persian Cats: They are the number one cats since the CFA started to keep record in 1871. These are loyal and affectionate cats but they need to be groomed everyday as they have long fur.
The Exotic Cats: This breed is like Persian with short fur so they need less grooming but they are as cute as the Persian cats. Their nickname is “Persian in Pajamas” because of their colours.
The Abyssinian: These are considered to be beautiful cats for their thin body, shiny coats and elegant personality. They are active, playful and very friendly.
The Ragdoll: They have got this name for their cute and cuddly nature. They love to cuddle. They go completely limp when you pick them in your arms. They are submissive and not likely to defend themselves so it’s best to keep them indoors.
The Birman: If you wanted a dog but have to get a cat because your girlfriend hates dogs then the Birmans are the best breed for you. They are even tempered, friendly and out-going. And the rarest thing in cat, they come when you call them and greet you at the door. Their long silky fur looks nice but doesn’t require much grooming. I’d rather call them the Feline-dogs!
The American Short-hair: These breed was bred for hunting. So they are great hunters though they don’t hunt people or large things. They hunt mice and they make great family pets. They are great with children. They have good health and they are quite cats.
Oriental cats: These are a lot like Siamese. They behave like Siamese. But they come in nearly 300 types of colours. Their personality is similar to that of a Siamese but they are quieter cats.
The Sphynx: They climb almost everything, great climbers. So their nickname is “the naked climber”. They are lively and athletic. They have an unusual appearance. They have different skin colours. They are loyal loving and constant attention seeker.
Manx cats: These are tailless breed and they are very friendly. They are social, attention-lover cats.
Burmese: They are friendly and very gentle with kids. They are people-oriented cats.
No matter what kind of a cat you want, there is a cat for everyone. Just now I realized while researching there is a cat for me too as I’m a dog person I will definitely love The Birman. Everyone should at least once know the mysteriously beautiful cats. Yes they are more unpredictable than the dogs (not discussing humans here) but that’s what makes it adventurous, isn’t it?
