Obesity in dogs is one of the most devastating disease in the dogs as well as humans too. Recent studies shows that 44% of dogs are obese in the U.S.A. Which is very shocking. Just as in people it can be the major cause for many other diseases like risks of cancer, high blood pressure, digestive problems, heart diseases etc You have to do something in order to prevent from obesity. Some of the most common causes of it which contributes in it are given below :- 1. AMOUNT AND TYPE OF FOOD – Some dogs eat only what they need to and will not demand any more. They’ll be happy for whatever they have to eat. These dogs generally won’t have any chance of obesity. Whereas some dogs eat as much as possible and then they’ll demand more. The type of food also matters in causing obesity. That’s why you should buy only dog food which is specially designed for dogs only. You should feed this food in a sufficient amount to your dogs even your dogs demand more with his adorable eyes, don’t give it in order to prevent from obesity. 2. EXERCISE – Exercise can be in the form of playing, wlking etc. Get your dog up from the couch and take him to outside. Some breeds of dogs are inactive like pug, their activity level is very low, you have to take them outside in order to play. Dogs who don’t exercise, have highly chances of obesity. 3. GENETICS – Yes, some breeds of dogs are likely to be become more overweight, but all breeds may not have the same tendency. Owners have to take care more these breeds which can be overweight like labrador retreivers, pugs, beagles , basset hounds etc. 4. HYPOTHYROIDISM – It is a disease which occurs by the deficiency of thyroid harmones. It can occur in dogs of any age but it is commonly seen in dogs between four to ten years of age. In this disease, thyroid don’t produce enough harmones needed which results in slowing metabolism. The symptoms of dogs includes weight gain, dry throat, hair loss, weakness and behavioral changes. There are symptoms by which you can see if your dog has become obese. 1. Weight gain 2. Excessive fat over dog’s anatomy 3. Laziness or disinclination 4. Breathing problem 5. Swollen abdomen RISKS WITH OBESITY :- Obesity is dangerous because it can be the major cause for other diseases.When dogs became overweight or obese then owners should be aware of them. According to various studies, overweight dogs lives shorter than the healthy dog. It can decrease even 1-2 years of their life span which is shocking. It may be an indicator of other diseases like hypothyroidism which I have already expained above. Other health risks that can be caused by becoming overweight : 1. Risk of Cancer 2. sugar diabetes and mellitus 3. Less heat tolerance 4. Hypertension 5. Urinary bladder stones 6. Digestive disorders 7. Decreased immune function 8. Decreased quality of life 9. Heart disease 10. Decreased energy level PREVENTIONS : – 1. STRICT DIET – If you want to control the obesity, like a responsible owner, then you have to make a strict diet for your dog. You can restrict your dog to eat only two times a day. You have to keep away two things from your dog, that is, carbohydrates and fats as they are the main things that are responsible for obesity in dogs.You can buy dog food from the pet store after checking their ingredients. You can feed them food which contains proteins as it helps to build muscles. 2. PROVIDE EXERCISE – After keeping your dog under strict diet, you have to monitor your dog if he is doing enough exercise. You can take them for a evening and morning walk which will not only improve your dog’s health but your health too. You can take him to park where he will get a chance to play with other dogs and children also. Some breeds of dogs are very lazy and he won’t get up from your couch or your lap so you have to grab him daily to take outside , no matter how much he is begging to you. You can also make him do swimming if he loves water, it is the best exercise for dogs for loosing weight and gets fit. If you care for him and wants to keep him healthy then you have to take some strict steps. 3. TAKE THEM TO VETERINARIAN – If even after keeping him under strict diet and providing sufficient exercise, he is not loosing weight then you can take him to veterinarian and if they finds any serious problems, they will find solutions and treat your dog before getting too late. Obesity can be easily controlled or treated if you take care of dogs. You just have to be a little strict towards your dog by monitoring his diet and providing enough exercise so that he can live longer and stay healthy.
