So, you are going to add a new member in your family but adopting a puppy? well, congratulations, no doubt, puppies are adorable but there are some myths about them too related to their behaviour and training. Sometimes, the image of the fantasy versus the actual reality can be difficult to handle by the pet parents. Here, I am going to tell you the top six myths about puppies :-
1. PUPPIES AND CHILDREN ARE NOT MEANT TO BE TOGETHER :-
You have heard millions of stories of children and their pups in movies and reality but do they always share the same loving and ever lasting bond? Having first dog is always special and by spending their most of the time with pup can create a bond with each other and this memory can last in child well into adulthood. They CAN form a beatiful bond and teach children maby lessons but you should not make the child caregiver of pup. Children are not well – experienced and for raising a pup, they should have enough tolerance and patience. But you cannot expect a child to behave like an adult with these qualities, I mean, they too, are CHILDREN. You should not simply assume that the puppy will be alright with your kids. First, you should teach your kids how to handle the responsibilities of pups, they should not shoulder the whole responsibility of pup alone.
2. RUBBING HIS NOSE IN HIS WASTE WILL POTTY – TRAIN HIM :-
Seriously, now this is disgusting, I mean would you potty – train a human child like this? This is one of the most Ewwwww myth I have ever heard. This is like punishment for your pup for doing nothing wrong. Instead of doing this, you should follow the right steps of potty – training. Pup is like a child and he know nothing so only you can help him in learning the basics. After twenty to thirty minutes of feeding, take him to the bathroom and wait for him to do his “business”. Do this after every two hours. When he do his business in the “right place” then reward him by giving him treat, in this case he will come to know that whatever he is doing is helping him in earning a treat. Even if he do it in your living room or bedroom, do not get angry, just clean it up, and learn from this experience so that you can be alert next time.
3. HE IS A SMALL PUP SO HE WILL BE A SMALL ADULT :-
This is very old myth, if you want your pup to raise in a small adult then it is recommended to visit shelter and research about the breed of dog as much as you can. People considers to buy small dogs as they thinks small dogs will need less exercise. This is another myth as small dogs are very energetic and hence, needs lots of exercise.
4. YOU CAN’T START TRAINING YOUR PUP UNTIL HE IS SIX MONTHS OLD :-
well, he can start training the day you bring him at home so there is no truth even in this myth. If you will wait till six months of age then your pup is going to have lot of bad behaviour which will difficult to undo for you. If you bring eight weeks old puppy in your home, then he is capable of learning all the basics of training. During this time, he can learn commands like sit and down, his name, walk on a leash, wait for you to released his food, and so much more. So do not skip this opportunity and start training your pup as soon as you bring him at home.
5. THEY ONLY LEARN IF YOU PUNISH THEM :-
How can someone punish an adorable pup? Some people believes that if you punish a puppy at early age then he will soon develop good behaviour. The punishment will only make him fearless and aggressive. You want your pet to become loving or aggressive? Obviously, no one wants their pet to be fearless. You can punish him when he does something wrong but not physically.
6. THE BEST WAY TO SOCIALIZE YOUR PUPPY IN THE PARK :- Socializing puppy in the park is just like throwing child into the pool for teaching swimming. Not every dog’s experiences are good in the park. If your pup faces bad experience then he will be traumatized from the park the whole life. This will also make her fearful from other dogs or make him aggressive. If you really want your pup to learn socializing skills then a supervised puppy play group or a well run puppy class is the best place. These classes are well – supervised and no pup will be bullied.
Now you have read all the myths about puppies so I hope you will not make any mistakes on which you regret later.
