Most of must have heard that ‘men are from Mars’ & ‘women are from Venus’. These are the common descriptions heard while quoting the differences in sexes in humans. But do you think the same policy applies to male and female dogs? Is there really any such sort of personality difference between them?
Well, for every normal person a dog is just a dog! It hardly concerns anyone whether it is a male or female, Irrespective of certain dog fanatics.
A person goes through several factors and options while choosing a dog. The size, colour, breed, and other while picking a particular pet. The sex of the pet does not go ignored. Even that has an important role to play. Did you know that many dog lovers usually call the word ‘dog’ for a male dog, while ‘bitch’ for female dog! Yes, seriously……! But we on the other hand will stick to males and females, or for that matter boys and girls.
Generally speaking, it is observed that male dogs are less prone to mood swings as compared to female dogs. Now before you start saying that your male dog is the moodiest one, let me just remember you I said ‘generally speaking’.
Male dogs are aggressive and hyper active animals. They are always hopping, jumping, running across places. Sometimes you may even wish that they had ‘switch on’ and ‘switch off’ button to process them accordingly. Female dogs on the other hand are very moody. They can be sweet and loving when they are happy – but can be really grumpy if it’s not to their liking. They can be rightly called the Tantrum Queens. This is because they are opiniated. These creatures can be really manipulative when it comes to convincing their owners in not doing something they are not ready for.
Yes, female dogs can be less pushy as compared to male dogs. They are even more affectionate, but that too is on their own terms. They may ask for lot of care and then walk away if they wish.
The activeness, moods and in general the normal behaviour of male dogs is mostly dependent on the factor whether their neutered or unneutered. Well, Neutering means surgically removing the testicles from the scrotum so the dog cannot breed. A female is also either intact or spayed. Spaying means removing the uterus and ovaries so that the female can’t have heat periods or become pregnant. A lot of behaviour patterns of the dogs depend on these factors. Usually, an unneutered dog is more aggressive and hyper active than a neutered one. Dominance and territorial behaviour can also be seen in unspayed females. But this does not mean that all unneutered and unspayed dogs will be this aggressive and territorially dominant. These are just general behaviour tendencies. A properly socialised and well petted dog can always be wonderful, attentive, obedient and a life-long companion. However there are certain general characteristics one must consider while choosing between a male and a female dog:
- TIME THAT YOU WILL ASSESS TO FOCUS ON THE DOG: a male dog is usually on its own, but loyal. While a female dog develops a greater string with the owner. Hence, it even demands for more attention.
- THE LEVEL OF PROTECTION THAT IS EXPECTED FROM THE DOG: male dogs are generally more dominant, active, and wild-looking than females. Males are even more loyal and naturally have these instincts.
- AVAILABILITY OF THE PET SPACE: female dogs are usually easier to housebreak. They even can hold their urine for a longer period of time and empty their bladder all at once. On the other hand, males usually can’t hold their urine for long. They usually are nerved up and cannot be confined to a pet house.
- START THE CHOICE ON PUPPIES: female dogs are the most appropriate choice if you want to raise puppies. Males are correct if you want to breed your dog. Female dogs are expensive to spay than males to neuter.
- EVALUATE THE ENERGY LEVEL OF YOUR FAMILY: it is very important to know what kind of family you are staying in before welcoming a dog. All families differ in their behaviour and energy level. Some are super active and always in a playful mood. In such type, male dogs are a perfect choice. While, some families are loving and affectionate but usually prefer a sober & silent atmosphere. In such cases, a female pet dog is appt.
There are even many other such facts that one must consider while selecting a canine. Like the appearance of the dog, a gender that matches your family, with respect to other pets, etc. So make a choice that is doubly- revised and something you won’t regret. So who cares if a dog is better than a bitch or a girl is better than boy, until you are happy with the companion you are with
